99-year-old man who had never tried fast food reviews takeaways for bucket list wish

Until recently, 99-year-old William Thorpe hadn’t even heard of a Big Mac or a Krispy Kreme.

Now, he’s a big fan as he tried all the nation’s favourite takeaways in one go to tick them off his bucket list.

William tried them with his friend Ann Sadler-Smith, 80, after staff at Oak house care home, where they live, had to explain what fast food was as he hadn’t heard of it.

So when staff at the care home in Slough, Berkshire, erected a wishing tree for residents to hang their wishes on, William asked to try a takeaway.

The manager at the care home arranged for William and Ann to try lots of different things from McDonald’s, Greggs, Subway, Domino’s, Burger King and Krispy Kreme so they could give their opinion.

They loved the Big Mac and Domino’s but weren’t big fans of the Greggs vegan sausage roll.

William said: ‘I’ve never really tried takeaway because in my day it just didn’t exist.

‘You didn’t have so many different styles of food and you definitely couldn’t have it delivered to your door, so it’s quite exciting really.

‘I’m used to eating from a plate with a knife and fork.’

Yvonne Keating, who leads the team at the Care UK home, said: ‘We are trying to grant as many wishes for residents as we can, from angling, to corresponding with famous football managers and we’ve really been busy this year.

‘The wishing tree initiative is something you’ll see in every single one of Care UK’s 120 homes, together we have made hundreds of wishes come true so far with even more lined up for 2020.’

Big Mac from McDonald’s

William said: ‘I loved the Big Mac, although I didn’t realise I had only picked up half of it, at first, what a huge burger that was.

‘McDonald’s was my favourite of the day, the sauce they used was delicious and the price seems very reasonable.’

Ann added: ‘I really like the Big Mac, it was quite large though so I’m not sure I would be able to finish it all, the chips were lovely too!’

Vegan sausage roll from Greggs

William said: ‘To be honest, I would never have been able to tell it was meat-free, it tasted like sausage to me.

‘It was alright but it would have been better if it was a bit hotter.’

Ann said: ‘I’m not as keen on this one because it was very dry. I also quite like my meat so when I discovered it wasn’t real sausage I was even more against it.’

Meatball marinara from Subway

William said: ‘I quite liked the Subway but there was too much filling, you can’t really eat it like a sandwich without it spilling out, I would suggest they decreased the amount of filling.

Ann said: ‘It’s nice and soft.’

Margherita pizza from Domino’s

William said: ‘Domino’s was really nice. I almost enjoyed it more than the Big Mac. It’s a very close draw with those two. I’d order it again.

Ann’s verdict: ‘Domino’s was my favourite, a definite winner for me. The sauce was very, very nice. I wasn’t sure how to eat it at first but it was lovely and chewy.’

Chicken nuggets from Burger King

William said: ‘The nuggets from Burger King were ok, they were just so dry, they should probably include a nice speciality nugget dip, like Domino’s and their garlic one.

‘They were a bit harder than the other foods we tried so that was quite a lot of chewing for me.’

Ann said: ‘I found these a bit more difficult to chew, so I probably wouldn’t get them again.’

Krispy Kreme doughnut

William said: ‘Now that doughnut was lovely, but I don’t think it’s best eaten after a meal because you don’t enjoy it as much.

‘The time for one of those is in the afternoon with a nice cup of tea.’

Ann said: ‘Now was a desert I could have again and again. It was so good, and the chocolate filling sweetened the deal. I wish would have had that first.’
