It’s very upsetting when a franchise takes away a beloved item, never to be seen or tasted again.
But sometimes they make a grand return, and now McDonald’s might be doing just that.
The fast food giant ‘accidentally’ teased the return of one previous fan-favourite and people think it may be about to make a comeback.
Those with the McDonald’s app were surprised to see a notification that popped up with the word ‘McRib’ and naturally people got excited.
At 9am yesterday morning, smartphone users with notifications enabled received the cryptic message which read ‘McRib_Test.notification_16.10.24 [TEST]’.
But when excited foodies clicked on the notification, it led to a web page with a 404 error screen.
Fans, however, think it was a deliberate gimmick by McDonald’s to release the return of the burger.
They were further vindicated when the text below the screen read: ‘There is definitely currently no reason for this page to not exist. Probably.’
The McRib was first launched in 1981 and had a good run until it was discontinued four years later.
It was last seen in the UK in 2014, but the burger – filled with a pork patty drenched in Western BBQ sauce, along with pickles and onions – has remained so popular that it even has its own website, the McRib locator, dedicated to branches of McDonald’s where it has recently been seen.
It has come and gone through the years and fans think it could soon be back again.
Users who received the notification couldn’t hold their excitement. One person, @matthirtyfive wrote” ‘YES!!!!!!!! The McRib is coming back!!!! Thanks whoever accidentally sent the McDs test notification you’ve made my day!!’
Meanwhile @Carryon90s wrote: ‘I so need a #McRib right now. TouchĂ© McDonalds’.
Others were more skeptical and called it a marketing ploy to get it trending or were confused about whether it was a genuine mistake.
@ZantaviousTV asked: ‘So was this intentional marketing or a screw up?’
Meanwhile @Elle wrote: ‘People on here saying McDonalds “messed up” their McRib announcement, that is literally the marketing strategy, it’s meant to be a test page to get ya talking’.
And @ThomsonFTD added: ‘Very smart marketing by Mcdonalds’.
So, is the McRib actually happening?
We reached out to the McDonald’s press office and they did respond to us.
But as you’d expect, they were pretty hush hush.
A spokesperson told Metro.co.uk: ‘McDonald’s is always looking to innovate with new and exciting menu items, as well as bringing back the fan favourites. Stay tuned for more info.’
Do with that information what you will.
