ITV interviewer fails to recognise former PM Liz Truss in ‘painful’ interaction

Liz Truss made history as the UK’s shortest-serving Prime Minister but not even two years later she has already become a distant memory.

In the mere 50 days that the Conservative politician was in office, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch Queen Elizabeth died, a head of lettuce outlived her premiership, and her mini-budget saw the pound plunge.

But the death knell to her political career came when she lost her parliamentary seat during the May 2024 election which saw Keir Starmer’s Labour party secure a decisive victory.

Now, the 49-year-old is spending her summer at horse racing and was attending Goodwood Racecourse with Scottish millionaire James Hay on Friday when ITV Racing broadcaster Matt Chapman came to interview the duo.

In a now-viral clip he immediately ignored a grinning Liz dressed in a white dress and sunglasses and instead asked James which horse he had the ‘most hope for’.

After James offered his analysis Matt promptly walked away, without even a second glance back at the former PM.

ITV commentator Richard Hoiles noted the strange cameo, saying: ‘That’s Liz Truss, isn’t it?’ to which his colleague replied: ‘It was – my eyes are not deceiving me.’

Richard then quipped: ‘This market could crash any minute, couldn’t it?’

The total lack of recognition has amused X users who couldn’t believe the prominent politician was already so forgettable.

‘Oh my god. Oh my god. He didn’t even recognise her. A former Prime Minister of his country. A very recent one. The commentary at the end too! Greatest clip yet. I am on the floor. I am not sure I will recover,’ @bmay posted to his followers.

Presenter Robert Peston also reacted, writing: ‘So funny’.

Many pointed out that Liz almost looks like she is waiting to be addressed, but it never comes.

‘The way she’s stood there expecting an interaction that never comes has just sent me,’ @despoticinroad wrote.

‘The smile, as she waits to be asked a question. Brilliant,’ @chrisbrosnahan added.

It is far from the first time Liz has been the subject of internet discourse.

At the end of her premiership, the Daily Star pitted her against some lettuce to see which would last longer.

The lettuce eventually won.

Addressing the stunt last year, the bestselling author said: ‘I don’t think that’s particularly funny I just think it’s puerile.

‘I think that the British media are known throughout the world for being particularly vociferous and I don’t think they are particularly deferential to politicians.’

She then added that sometimes ‘politics is sort of treated as a branch of the entertainment industry.’
