Game of Thrones fans know exactly how to save spin-off series after crushing axe

The potential Game of Thrones spin-off centred on Kit Harington’s character Jon Snow is no longer in development, but fans have an idea to bring it back.

The actor revealed that it’s ‘off the table,’ due to a struggle to find the right story that’s worth telling.

After the main series ended in 2019, fans were elated when it was reported three years later that a sequel was being considered.

The HBO show would have allowed viewers to catch up with Jon, who was sentenced to the Night’s Watch after killing Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) to stop her from causing further destruction.

While there would have been many avenues to explore in this next chapter of the fictional character’s life, it wasn’t to be.

Kit stated why he’d never previously spoken about the project until now: ‘I didn’t want it leaked out that it was being developed, and I didn’t want the thing to happen where people kind of start theorizing, getting either excited about it or hating the idea of it, when it may never happen.’

While speaking to Screen Rant, he explained that while in development they ‘look at every angle’ to ‘see whether it’s worth it’. They’ve now concluded that it isn’t and so it’s ‘off the table’.

‘We all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough. So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being,’ he sais.

‘There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. It’s firmly on the shelf.’

News of the shelving travelled fast amongst the fan community, and they came up with a plan to revive the idea.

Gibbsy 816 wrote on Reddit that they should wait a while so Jon Snow can age, and then pick up where they left off.

‘Personally I like the idea of waiting some time and then picking up the story with an older Jon Snow. You can explore what happened in the intervening years.

‘I do think they’ll need to figure out what they could do with Jon that is really interesting. He’s already united the wildlings, ventured north of the wall, there’s no (apparent) threat from the others anymore.

‘I’m sure they could come up with something but I think it’s probably for the best they let this one sit for a while before they come back to it,’ they concluded.

The idea was seemingly approved by many, with over 90 people hitting the upvote option and zero choosing to select downvote.

‘I would actually be really down for this,’ chimed in Recovered Ashes.

NickWangOG suggested a potential title (we think): ‘Somehow Night King returned.’

Game of Thrones came to an end after eight seasons with the final episodes considered divisive and viewers were certainly unafraid to voice their distaste.

One of the sticking points was how things ended for Jon Snow, including his dispelling to the Night’s Watch when he was a rightful heir to the Iron Throne. The ‘unsatisfying ending’ could get a second chance in any revival, but they may have to address any plot holes.

While there hasn’t been a sequel to Game of Thrones yet, there have been two seasons of prequel House of the Dragon, and The Winds of Winter is in the works.

Kit is being kept busy – he is set to star in Mary’s Monster based on author Mary Shelley’s mental health struggle while writing the 1818 novel Frankenstein. He married Game of Thrones co-star Rose Leslie in 2018 and the couple have two children together.

Game of Thrones is available to watch on Sky and NOW.
