Dani Dyer couldn’t believe it when she went to get her Mirena coil checked and the doctor told her it was ‘missing’.
The 27-year-old Love Island star – and daughter of EastEnders actor Danny Dyer – wasn’t ‘getting on’ with her Mirena coil contraception so went to see her GP.
‘I had to have a couple of appointments today,’ she began in a front-facing Instagram story.
‘One of them was to check my Mirena coil because I’ve not really been getting on with it.
‘I thought I’d just go and get it checked and see what could be going on… And it’s gone missing.
‘It’s completely dislodged, moved,’ she explained, still in shock.
Wary of alarming her followers, Dani added: ‘He said this is rare by the way, so anyone who’s got it, I don’t want to scare you. I don’t want to ringing your GPs tomorrow.’
Then came the drop, as Dani confessed: ‘I’ve basically got to have keyhole surgery to remove it.’
The mum-of-three added, ‘I can’t believe what’s happened,’ as she also wrote over the top of the video, alongside two shocked emoji: ‘Imagine I could have ended up with a fourth child this year.’
Two types of coil exist on the NHS – the IUS or ‘hormonal’ coil, which brand name Mirena falls under, and the non-hormonal IUD copper coil.
Both are small T-shaped devices that are inserted into the womb. While an IUS stops pregnancy by releasing localised hormone progestogen into the womb, the copper coil stops sperm from surviving in the cervix or womb, without using hormones.
Is the Mirena coil safe?
An IUS is very safe.
It is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.
However, the NHS says there are some ‘rare risks’.
These include pelvic infections (which usually occur within three weeks of a fitting); the IUS moving or coming out (usually within three months of having it fitted); and damage to the womb.
If the IUS fails, it can lead to an ectopic pregnancy – when a fertilised egg implants itself outside of the womb, usually in one of the fallopian tubes.
Ask for an urgent GP appointment or call NHS’s 111 if you have an IUS and:
- you have pain in your lower tummy (abdomen) and painkillers do not help
- you get sudden pain in your lower tummy that gets worse or does not go away
- you have a high temperature
- you have unusual or smelly discharge
- you have very heavy vaginal bleeding
- you think you might be pregnant
- you cannot feel the threads of your IUS, or they feel different
Dani and her partner, West Ham footballer Jarrod Bowen, also 27, welcomed twin daughters – Summer and Star – last year.
The reality TV star is also mum to three-year-old Santiago with former partner Sammy Kimmence, who she was with before her 2018 appearance on Love Island.
Sammy and Dani rekindled their romance after she split from Jack Fincham, who she met on the ITV show.
Dani then separated from Sammy for a second time when he pleaded guilty of – and went to jail for – scamming two vulnerable pensioners out of almost £34,000 by posing as a financial advisor.
He was released from jail in 2022.
In December 2021, Dani and Jarrod made things Instagram official. The pairannounced in January 2023 they were expecting twins in the ‘biggest surprise’ of their lives.
In a post shared on Instagram, Dani wrote: ‘We have been keeping a little secret… Our little TWINS ♡ ♡
‘So excited to meet our babies and watch santi be the best big brother..
‘The biggest surprise of our lives but feeling SO blessed.. our family is getting a lot bigger and we can’t wait✨.’
The surprises kept on coming when the TV personality revealed to her 3.7million followers that the twin girls would be identical.
