Move over Patrick Swayze, Jake Gyllenhaal’s remake of cult movie Road House has stunned viewers as first reviews roll in.
The 1989 classic and its 2024 version follow ex-UFC fighter Dalton who becomes a bouncer at the mysterious Florida Keys roadhouse, which hides a dark secret.
Reimagined by Amazon Prime Video, the new version has already impressed and landed a fresh score of 77% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
With the first 26 reviews, only six have been negative — known as ‘rotten’ on the site — as critics praise the gritty and bloody joy ride.
Swayze’s original version by comparison sits at a splat-inducing 41% from critics, while audiences have more favourably rated it 67%.
The casting of the Nocturnal Animals star was announced in 2022 to a surprised fanbase, given that the remake was originally announced over a decade ago.
Conor McGregor was announced as Jake’s co-star while Fast X’s Daniela Melchior, White Lotus’ Lukas Gage, and randomly Post Malone round out the cast.
Doug Liman will direct, having been behind successes such as the Bourne series, Mr & Mrs Smith, and Edge of Tomorrow.
Speaking about the project previously, he said: ‘I’m thrilled to put my own spin on the beloved Road House legacy.
‘And I can’t wait to show audiences what Jake and I are going to do with this iconic role.’
To play the former MMA fighter, the Marvel actor showed off his already toned physique pushed to new levels of muscle.
Building hype for the film, Jake appeared at a UFC285 ceremonial weigh-in last March and met his ‘opponent’ former UFC fighter Jay Hieron.
The pair squared up, with the Brokeback Mountain icon slapping Jay across the face as the crew rushed in to tear them apart (all in good fun).
Speaking to the compere, Jake shouted: ‘Man, this f***er just makes me laugh because he’s a f***ing joke.
‘Let’s go. Just give me the belt, give it to me.’
Road House will be available on Amazon Prime from March 21.
