Costa Coffee fans furious over ‘cheap’ change to menu item

Fans of Costa’s breakfast menu will notice something different about the chain’s sausage bap next time they order.

Despite costing the same amount, the roll now contains three sausages instead of four, in a move that’s been described as ‘cheap’ by fans online.

When X (formerly Twitter) user Paul Hayday queried the change, the brand reasoned it was to make the bap easier for customers to eat without mess.

A Costa social media representative replied: ‘We had listened to our customers feedback and to stop the rolling away sausage, we have kept the same recipe but increased the size to make three larger sausages which fit a lot better into the bap.’

Paul wasn’t happy with the response, however, commenting: ‘Are you sure it’s not a cheaper option? What was the size of the old sausage vs the new one?’

At £3.75, shoppers have queried whether the sausage bap is the latest product to fall victim to shrinkflation, when items get smaller while their pricing stays the same.

Consumer finance expert Martyn James said: ‘I’m just not buying the “three bigger sausages” line here.

‘The problem with having a successful product is people notice when you tinker with it. So there was no way regular shoppers were going to fail to spot the mystery of the missing sausage.’

Costa Coffee then told LADbible: ‘We changed our sausage bap recipe following feedback from our store teams re: operational challenges during the cooking process – the fourth sausage was falling out the bap.

‘We’ve moved from 4 smaller sausages, replacing it with 3 bigger sausages to fit the bap neatly for a more even cook and enjoyable experience.

‘This has resulted in a small change in the weight of the overall bap, under 5g.’

This brings Costa’s offering in line with the Greggs sausage bap, which contains three bangers, and still beats Starbucks, where customers get two sausages (cut in half horizontally) in their roll.

Yet it comes alongside changes to Costa’s loyalty scheme, where it now takes 10 drinks – rather than the previous eight – to reach a freebie reward. Prices at Express machines have also gone up to ‘reflect ongoing challenges faced by many retailers’.

Costa regular @rodders21085 said: ‘Most things they’ve changed are pretty bad… All to save cost but still upping prices.’

A spokesperson for the chain commented: ‘We understand that any change in pricing can be challenging for our customers and strive to provide the best experience and quality products for our customers on-the-go, whilst rewarding our Costa Club members with amazing discounts and exclusive offers.’
