Once it was enough just to spray your favourite scent, straight from the bottle and go out for the day – hoping it would last.
Sadly the same can’t be said these days, with the rollout (literally) of fragrances that can be applied in all sorts of different ways.
Jo Malone has just launched of a new range of ‘fragrance paintbrushes’, and this is just one of the latest ways you can apply your fragrance in layers.
Founder of ‘Jo Loves’, Jo Malone CBE, developed her Fragrance Paintbrush as a testament to her artist father. ‘I’ve always loved to paint on my fragrances with an artist’s paintbrush, to build and layer scent notes,’ she says.
‘That’s when I came up with the Fragrance Paintbrush idea and now it’s one of our fastest-selling products. It’s reusable, refillable and more sustainable.’
Suzy Nightingale, fragrance expert and co-host of On The Scent podcast, says the new varying formats provide a calming ritual to an ever-busy and ever more anxious public.
‘I am drawn to roll-on perfumes and pulse point perfumes,’ she says. ‘There is something really calming in the ritual of applying it. These new formats have really hit a market hungry for functional fragrances. Now, more than ever before, people want to know that their fragrance is working hard for them.
‘They want products that give you something else – something you have got in your bag, something you can reapply or – in the case of Veronique Gabai’s wonderful aromatherapy range, which includes a bottle of perfume that slots into a gorgeous gold and silver necklace – something you can actually wear, too.’
Diptyque has developed a solid perfume which can also be refilled (£53), while ArGENTUM has performed perfume magic in the form of a bottle which contains a cute silver talisman in the lid.
Twist it off – and wear it around your neck, while you spritz the invigorating scent on your skin and hair (£228 for 70ml).
Suzy also cites the example of Rare Beauty, the new range from actress Selena Gomez.
‘It demonstrates completely different ways of wearing a fragrance,’ she says. ‘There’s a Stop & Soothe Aromatherapy Pen, which is a pulse point gel you can apply wherever you want. It’s a really nice sophisticated blend, with a quite minty and cool aroma – almost a safe place that you can go to every time you use it. It is in a lipstick-style case which pops into your bag, so it’s ready for reapplying at any time.’
Wear it, roll it, cherish it. In a market hungry for more – it makes perfect scents.
For those on a tighter budget...
PrettyLittleThing have recently launched four brand new fragrances that some are saying smell incredibly similar to some designer counterparts.
Best of all? They’re priced at £12 each right now.
