The MSI gaming handheld is real and has leaked a week ahead of its official reveal at CES.
Earlier in the week, tech company MSI was teasing a new handheld gaming device, in a video with blacked out images and two flashy looking joysticks, making it look very much like a Steam Deck.
The teaser video followed up with the caption ‘coming soon,’ and the hashtag ‘MSIxCES2024,’ alluding to the Consumer Technology Association event set to take place from January 9 in Las Vegas.
However, before that happens, a leak has revealed not only what the device looks like but its name, and exact technical specifications.
The MSI handheld is reportedly called Claw, and looks similar to the Asus ROG Ally – in that neither of them have trackpads like Valve’s Steam Deck.
Leaked benchmarks also suggest that the MSI Claw will be powered by the Intel Core Ultra 7 155H processor, with 32GB of memory – twice the RAM of the ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion Go, and the Steam Deck.
The MSI Claw will also operate on Windows 11 64-bit, unlike the Steam Deck which runs on Linux.
There isn’t any information about the screen size or if it’s an OLED monitor or not, but a leaked image suggest it will be roughly the same size as its competitors.
The leak was first reported by VideoCardz, who cites benchmarking site Geekbench for the specifications.
Assuming the information is correct almost every PC tech company will now have its own portable device, even if the Steam Deck is still by far and away the most popular.
The teaser video from MSI below certainly seems to confirm the leak, with another clue in its caption, saying: ‘A whole new breed of MSI dragon is coming. Get a grip and stay tuned.’
With CES less than a week away we won’t have to wait very long for confirmation and hopefully some footage of it in action – as well as the all-important price.
