Kristen Stewart is going full-on queer theory for Twilight and we are here for it.
The actress, 33, first shot to fame as a child actor alongside Jodie Foster in thriller Panic Room, and solidified her name on the global stage with the Twilight franchise at 18.
Based on the novels Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn, the films of the same name became a worldwide phenomenon with a huge fanbase that still thrives today.
Now Kristen, who came out as gay publicly in 2017 and is engaged to screenwriter Dylan Meyer, says she’s recently begun to see a queer side to the franchise.
On the surface, it’s an extremely heterosexual story about a love triangle between a human girl, her vampire boyfriend and her pining werewolf childhood friend.
But as Kristen puts it: ‘It’s such a gay movie.’
‘I mean … Taylor [Lautner], and Rob [Pattinson] and me, and [the relationship] is so hidden and not okay.’
Referencing author Stephenie Meyer, she went on: ‘A Mormon woman wrote this book. It’s all about oppression, about wanting what’s going to destroy you. That’s a very Gothic, gay inclination that I love.’
She went on, in an interview with Variety: ‘I can only see it now. I don’t think it necessarily started off that way, but I also think that the fact I was there at all, it was percolating.’
Kristen famously came out on Saturday Night Live in 2017 with a dig at then-president Donald Trump, saying he was ‘probably not going to like me now, because I’m hosting SNL, and I’m like, so gay, dude.’
Before this, when she was seen getting close with a girl – however close – they were often referred to as her ‘gal pal’, something she’s baffled by.
‘It wasn’t even like I was hiding,’ she said. ‘I was so openly out with my girlfriend for years at that point. I’m like, “I’m a pretty knowable person.”‘
Kristen previously had a high-profile relationship with her Twilight co-star Robert, who is now expecting his first child with musician Suki Waterhouse.
Spencer star Kristen is preparing to wed her long-term girlfriend Dylan, with the pair first getting together in 2019.
They announced their engagement in 2021 after Dylan proposed,
