70s music icon reveals she can’t retire for one shocking reason

The Nolans star has revealed that she can’t retire despite selling millions of records as part of the seventies group.

Maureen Nolan, 69, was part of the band alongside sisters Anne, 73; Denise, 71; Linda, 64; Coleen, 58; and Bernie, 51.

But despite releasing a string of hits – including I’m in the Mood for Dancing, Gotta Pull Myself Together, and Who’s Gonna Rock You – Maureen has been forced to continue working day-to-day to get by.

The ‘broke’ musician revealed she had no savings or pension and currently lives in a rented house.

She claims she and her sisters were conned by merchants when the group formed in 1974, and that they made poor financial decisions as they did not know any better.

‘I need to keep working. We thought we’d be comfortably set up by this point in our lives, but I don’t have a pension, I don’t have any savings and I rent a house,’ she told The Mirror.

‘When I split up from my husband in 2016, we sold our home. I couldn’t have bought a new place without a mortgage and at my age you can’t get a mortgage.

‘I never thought I would ever rent. It would be nice to have just enough money to say, “Ok, I’m out of here, showbiz-wise.” But I don’t have that.’

She described showbusiness as a ‘feast of famine’, and added that money troubles worry her as she enters retirement age.

‘Of course, I worry about money, and the older I get the more I worry,’ she continued. ‘They say money doesn’t buy happiness, but it makes misery a little bit easier, I think.’

Maureen also revealed her other sisters are in similar situations, with the exception of her sister Coleen who appears as a host on Loose Women.

Coleen recently opened up about her family history of cancer which could ‘scare her to death’

Bernie died in 2013 at the age of 52 after being diagnosed with breast cancer, which metastasised to her brain, lungs, liver, and bones after it returned.

Linda was originally diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006 and received the all-clear five years later. However, doctors discovered a form of incurable secondary breast cancer on her pelvis, and in March this year, she revealed it had metastasized to her brain.

Anne recovered from cancer for a second time in the last few years, while in July, Coleen shared that she had been diagnosed with a form of skin cancer called basal-cell carcinoma.

‘We get through it all with humour, because what has happened to us is a joke,’ she told The Mirror.
