Strictly Come Dancing has got very spooky for Halloween week, and Craig Revel Horwood got in the spirit with a frighteningly cutting shutdown.

While critiquing Layton Williams and Nikita Kuzmin’s tango to Vampire by Olivia Rodrigo, head judge Shirley Ballas thought they hadn’t stayed true to the Ballroom style.

The 63-year-old, who was dressed as the evil Queen from Snow White, praised Layton for his exceptional dance skills but also had some criticism.

‘For me, it is still a Ballroom and Latin competition, and there are certain fundamentals especially when going into a promenade which is a very basic step,’ she began before the audience started booing.

‘Hang on a minute please,’ she warned the viewers before continuing to explain the technique and asking him to use his heels correctly.

‘It is a Ballroom and Latin competition. I would like to see a little bit more of the footwork but everything else is A* so well done.’

Craig, who looked marvellous as Snape from Harry Potter, wasn’t in total agreement.

‘Well, I certainly can’t agree with Shirley that this is strictly a Ballroom and Latin competition. We have many other forms of dancing that we do as well darling,’ Craig, 58, insisted.

Shirley responded with an: ‘Oh darling.’

Craig called the routine a ‘theatrical triumphant,’ which pleased Layton, 29 and Nikita, 25.

Despite their disagreement, they both gave the dance a 9 alongside Anton Du Beke and Motsi Mabuse giving them an impressive total of 36. Their high total put them second on the leaderboard behind Ellie Leach and Vito Coppola who scored 38 for their Salsa.

Earlier in the episode, hosts Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly spoke out on camera about Amanda Abbington’s exit.

Amanda, 51, didn’t give specific reasons for her departure, but it came one week after she was given a pass to the next show due to medical reasons.

‘Now, earlier this week, Amanda Abbington withdrew from the competition,’ Claudia said.

‘Amanda, we are sending you all our love.’

Strictly Come Dancing airs Saturday and Sunday on BBC One and iPlayer.
