The Script frontman Danny O’Donoghue has spoken out for the first time since the death of Mark Sheehan.
Sheehan died in April after a short illness, with the band sharing their grief with fans as the news broke.
The Irish group wrote at the time: ‘Much loved husband, father, brother, band mate and friend Mark Sheehan passed away today in hospital after a brief illness.
‘The family and group ask fans to respect their privacy at this tragic time.’
It has taken time for the surviving Script members to speak out individually as they come to terms with the shocking loss of their friend, with bass player Ben Sargeant saying later in April he was ‘honoured to have known’ Sheehan.
Now O’Donoghue has issued a statement warning fans he won’t be contactable for a while as they prepare to play tribute shows in honour of Sheehan.
Taking to Instagram, the singer shared a solemn image of a candle burning in the darkness, and wrote: ‘We need to be one big family right now, so we’re switching off our personal accounts for a while ahead of the shows.
‘We’ll be posting content from Marks tribute shows in Blackpool and Wolverhampton on @thescriptoffical.’
He finished with the words: ‘Big love,’ along with a heart emoji.
O’Donoghue previously wrote a touching tribute to his bandmate and long-time friend back in 2020, while reflecting on their friendship.
He said at the time that he was ‘blessed beyond measure’ to know him – something echoed by bassist Sargeant in April following his death.
Sargeant wrote on Instagram: ‘This is so difficult to write. Struggling to find words that are good enough. What can I say about a man who had a life changing impact on me and all around him.
‘A fiercely loyal and dedicated family man, husband, father, brother, friend. A man who showed me that persistence, belief, dedication and hard graft does pay off in the music industry!
‘A man that always shone a new light on a situation and inspired you to find a new way to approach it. A man who could put lyrics together in a way that made you feel he was talking directly to you.’
‘An extremely gifted performer who could disarm the most high pressure performance by coming over in the middle of a song and giving a knowing look, or a cheeky smile,’ he praised. ‘Or just take the p**s out of you! A man who worked tirelessly and was more driven that anyone else I’ve known.’
He went on to say he was ‘honoured to have known you and shared these times with you, thank you for all you did for me.
‘I will miss you terribly and I will never forget you. Love you. See you at the big bar in the sky, brother.’
