The Foo Fighters’ performance on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Music Festival 2023 was electric to say the least, with the band bashing out their classics in their hour-long slot.
During their final moments on stage, the group’s frontman Dave Grohl took a moment to pay homage to the late Taylor Hawkins, their former drummer who died last year at the age of 50.
‘I would like to dedicate this song to the Mr Taylor Hawkins,’ he said, before they began performing Everlong.
‘So let’s sing this one loud, we’re missing Taylor.’
As the crowds began to chant Taylor’s name, Dave looked up to the sky, pointing to the heavens with a smile on his face.
People who were there in person at the performance and those watching at home were similarly moved by the scenes they witnessed.
‘Dave dedicating Everlong to Taylor Hawkins at Glastonbury. No…… You’re crying,’ one person tweeted.
‘Dave Grohl dedicating “Everlong” to Taylor Hawkins has me in pieces,’ another penned.
Someone else wrote: ‘As cliche as it is, Everlong has always been my favourite Foo Fighters song, even if it’s quite heartbreaking now. RIP Taylor Hawkins.’
Among the outpouring of heartbreak over Taylor no longer being around after his death more than a year ago, there was also praise for drummer Josh Freese, who was announced as a new addition to the Foo Fighters in May this year.
After the band’s Glastonbury performance, one Twitter user remarked: ‘Josh Freese single handedly making drumming of some epic rock songs look a piece of cake.
‘Nothing will replace Taylor Hawkins, but Josh has made a great addition to the band. Take a bow!’
‘Seeing the Foo Fighters perform without Taylor Hawkins is strange but Josh Freese smashed it,’ someone else wrote.
One fan of the band added: ‘Loving Josh Freese, miss you Taylor but a grand replacement for a top drummer #RIP.’
Another said: ‘Josh Freese you killed it on the drums man 🙏🏻 Taylor would be proud.’
During their time on stage, Dave also paid homage to Josh, 50, who’s played with bands in the past including Guns N’ Roses, Weezer and Nine Inch Nails, describing him as ‘the man who helped us to be here today’.
