Sir David Attenborough reveals his first meeting with King Charles and how it could have gone very wrong

On the evening before the Coronation of King Charles III, Sir David Attenborough celebrated by sharing a sweet anecdote of the first time the pair met.

While speaking on BBC’s The Eve of The Coronation, Sir David, 96, revealed that he met Charles, 74, when he was a nine-year-old boy and they were joined by Princess Anne and a very special animal.

‘He came to the [BBC] studios and I’d just come back from Uganny with a load of animals, which were going to the London zoo.

‘I had a pet cockatoo, a white cockatoo, and I was asked to bring it to the studio which I did.’

Although Sir David has trust in his beloved animals, there was a small part of him that was worried about what could possibly go wrong.

‘They have a very powerful beak and a very powerful bite. Although I’m very confident in them it could have actually removed Charles’ little finger.’

Luckily, everything worked out as planned.

‘All was well and it was a very happy occasion,’ Sir David concluded.

Sir David also shared how much he’s enjoyed watching Charles champion environmental causes: ‘He saw very clearly the importance of the natural world right from a small child.’

Sir David now has something very special in common with Charles – the pair both have Blue Peter gold badges.

He received the honour with Queen Consort Camilla.
