Over time, we’ve become more aware of the impact our menstrual products are having on the environment.

Every year, 45 billion menstrual products are disposed of globally. In just the UK, that’s around three billion.

Most of these items are made of 90% plastic and can take over 500 years to break down fully, contributing to almost 200,000 tonnes of landfill and adding to rising global emissions.

As a result of our growing awareness of this issue, many people who have periods began searching for a more sustainable option.

Tampon-wearers got a solid alternative in the menstrual cup, but pad-wearers are yet to find something as useful… until now, that is.

The eco-conscious among you will be pleased to hear that you can now buy flushable sanitary towels – and they break down just like toilet paper.

Fluus pads are the only pads that guarantee no microplastics and no permanent waste, and they’re the very first of their kind.

Designed by Dr. Olivia Ahn, a medical doctor, and Aaron Koshy, an engineer, Fluus pads are made with Flushtec, a patent-pending flushable technology.

According to the company, the pad is made from plant fibres, biopolymers, and tree sap, which are broken down by the water and motion of the flush.

The remaining fibres can then be filtered out at the water treatment centre, and the environment is none the wiser.

If you’re wondering how the natural materials manage to disintegrate in the toilet but not in your underwear, you’re not alone.

According to Fluus, the pad needs to be fully submerged in water (around 100 times the amount of liquid in the average period) to degrade, so you’re in the clear as long as you don’t go swimming.

Fluus pads are slightly more expensive than the majority of period products on the market at £5 for 15, but they’re 15% more absorbent than market-leader and you get a discount when you buy in bulk.

They’re also available as a monthly subscription that can be paused, skipped or cancelled whenever, which is pretty handy if you’re regular.

We know we speak for all the pad wearers out there when we say it’s about bloody time we got some flushable products.

Go forth, and never worry about the lack of a bathroom bin again.

Check out Fluus on the brand’s website.
