Race Across the World’s Mobeen has shared a heartstopping moment, during which he feared for his life, that didn’t make the final cut in the BBC programme.
The doctor has teamed up with his wife, Zainib, for the travel series, which sees duos travel from one end of Canada to the other with a limited budget and no access to mobile phones or the internet.
Instead, the teams must take on a variety of jobs to earn extra cash, stick with budget accommodation and rely on the kindness of strangers to make the epic trip from Vancouver to Newfoundland.
But as Mobeen explained to Metro.co.uk the unpredictable nature of the programme did lead to some hair-raising incidents, including being driven into the ‘middle of nowhere’ by a trucker they’d caught a lift from.
‘There was nothing, it was just a little lay-by,’ Mobeen continued. ‘And he didn’t announce it. He was quite a quiet and reserved dude. Very one-word answer kind of guy.
‘And he just stopped and goes, “Toilet break if you need,” and we’re like “All right,” so we jumped out.’
Mobeen said he just had Zainib and a female member of the production team with him, Georgie, and ‘suddenly felt very protective of them’ when the trucker ‘pulled out a big, massive metal bar.’
He said: ‘I’m like, “What the hell is going on?” Our crew van was somewhere down the road they stopped to take pictures and stuff. I sh*t myself. I thought this guy was about to whack us.
‘You could tell the other two were scared as well. And I got scared.’
However, Mobeen revealed the toilet stop was genuine and the metal bar was just to ‘tighten the straps on the back of his lorry.’
He admitted: ‘It was obviously horrible [to have had that thought about him] as the guy didn’t do anything wrong. It was just my perception.’
Laughing he confessed, that it was ‘hilarious’ how the three of them had responded, knowing now there was no danger whatsoever.
Mobeen also shared a poignant moment with a man named Corey, who told them about his late ‘best friend’ – a pet dog that he’d lost.
Explaining that he and his dog used to jump into the same BC lake every year, he convinced Mobeen and Zainib to stop by the beauty stop in honour of his pooch.
Mobeen told us he’s still in touch with Corey, who was thrilled after making an appearance in the trailer, via email.
‘He’s loving [the show],’ Mobeen said. ‘He’s got a new dog now and he sent us a picture of his new pet.’
Race Across the World continues on BBC One and iPlayer on Wednesday at 9pm.
