As the release date gets closer fan theories are getting wilder, although the stuff about an Infinity Necklace does seems like it might be true…
Despite multiple trailers and a 10 minute gameplay video we still know next to nothing about the plot of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom. Ganondorf is back and… that’s about all that’s ever been said (or rather shown) officially.
That’s led to a huge range of fan theories as to what’s going on, involving everything from time travel to the return of Midna from Twilight Princess.
They’re all reasonably plausible but they can’t all be true, and with the lack of any solid facts to base them on it’s becoming hard to judge how likely some of them really are. For example, do you really think there’s a good version of Ganondorf in the game?
That sounds unlikely, considering he’s the King of Evil and all that, but rather than being an alternative version of Link many are beginning to think that the mysterious figure, seen talking to Zelda in the final trailer, is actually a good version of Ganondorf from an alternative timeline.
Whoever it is, they are unusually tall, which fits Ganondorf better than Link, and their outfit is reminiscent of his look from the Ocarina Of Time era. Plus, the version of Ganondorf from Tears Of The Kingdom looks completely different, almost as if Nintendo is purposefully creating a distinction.
This is backed up a sequence in Breath Of The Wild, which features a tapestry showing a ‘hero’ defeating Calamity Ganon that looks a lot more like Ganondorf than it does Link.
Why he’d be helping to defeat himself isn’t clear but the character in question seems to have been revealed via a Japanese download card (the guy on the right) and… it’s hard to tell whether it could be an alternate Ganondorf or not.
When it comes to the definitely-evil Ganondorf, fans have noticed that the necklace he’s wearing seems to have empty holes for gems, much like Thanos’ Infinity Gauntlet.
It doesn’t seem much of a stretch to imagine that Ganodorf is trying to collect tears to fill it, with a number of characters, including Zelda and Sidon, having one in the trailer – perhaps implying each race has one to guard.
At that point though the theories enter the realm of wishful thinking, with some suggesting that each tear is also connected to a dungeon. There seems to be maybe seven or so, which is about the right number for a traditional Zelda game but so far there’s been nothing to suggest that kind of dungeon will be in the game.
As ever, we’ll only find out for sure when the game is out but, thankfully, May 12 is getting very close, at which point all, or at least most, of fans’ questions will be answered.
