Metallica have clinched their first number one album in 15 years with new record 72 Seasons.
The legendary rockers have just released their 11th studio album, shortly after they were confirmed to make two appearances at Download festival this year.
New album 72 seasons is their first collection of new material since 2016, and it’s clear it’s a hit with fans, as it has soared to the top spot of the UK charts.
California rock stars Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo’s newest offering has proved so succesful, in fact, that it has outsold their last five albums combined.
It is their first number one album since 2008’s Death Magnetic, with their other number ones coming in 1996 with Load, and their self-titled LP in 1991.
Upon learning the news they had topped the charts in the UK, the band told Official Charts it was ‘spectacular.’
‘We’re grateful. Thank you, UK – we can’t wait to see you!’
As well as a number one album, 72 Seasons has also topped the Official Vinyl Albums Chart as well as the Official Record Store Chart, having been the most-purchased album in the UK’s independent record shops.
While Metallica will rock out at Download festival this summer, there were no UK dates included in their headline tour announced late last year.
The M72 world tour has seen the band sign on to play two nights in every city they visit, with completely different set list and support acts each night of the city.
Fans will have the option of buying two-day tickets for both shows in the city, with some taking place the very next day and others seeing a few days between them.
Things kick off in Europe, with shows in Amsterdam, Paris, Hamburg and Gothenburg, before they head Stateside for multiple shows in North America, before returning to mainland Europe before heading bacak yeet again to the US, Canada and Mexico.
But while there are no headline dates for the UK, they will play twice at Download – June 8 and June 10, meaning festivalgoers will get the two-date specialty offered to those seeing the tour.
M72 kicks off this month and is not due to come to an end until the end of September 2024, meaning James, Lars, Kirk and Robertwill be on the road for well over a year.
