Jerry Springer’s cause of death has been revealed as pancreatic cancer, it has been claimed.
The presenter, who helmed the Jerry Springer Show, died on Thursday at the age of 79, with a family spokesperson confirming the news.
Speaking about their loss, close friend Jean Galvin told NBC News that he died of pancreatic cancer, sharing a tribute to the late star.
‘Jerry’s ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried whether that was politics, broadcasting or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word,’ she said.
‘He’s irreplaceable and his loss hurts immensely, but memories of his intellect, heart and humor will live on.’
Springer shot to worldwide fame when the Jerry Springer Show premiered in September, 1991.
The eponymous program first started out as a politics talk show before the presenter revamped the format, allowing guests on the platform to share their grievances and upsets in front of a live audience.
Although it drew millions of viewers throughout the 27 seasons, before it went off air in 2018, Springer described the series as ‘stupid’ in a candid interview, admitting that he ‘ruined the culture’.
Appearing on the Today Show in 2017, he began the interview by apologizing for a clip montage that played out.
‘It’s stupid,’ he said when asked why the program had been so successful. ‘And it’s got a niche, and no one else kind of goes in that niche, so I think that’s one of the reasons it’s lasted.
‘The personality of the guests. No one’s watching because of me, they’re watching because the stories are crazy and the people are outrageous.’
‘When it started, we were a serious show. But then all of a sudden, it started going crazy. And when Universal bought us, they said, “From now on, only crazy.”
Following the end of the Jerry Springer Show, he went on to helm Judge Jerry, and also competed on Dancing with the Stars and the Masked Singer.
Before the program hit the airwaves, the late star enjoyed a career in politics, and ran for Congress in 1970.
He was elected to the Cincinnati City Council the following year and served for three years, before he was asked to take on the role of mayor of Cincinnati in 1997.
