Let’s face it; there are times when only a McDonald’s will do.

Whether getting a drive-through for an early-start road trip or finding yourself with only ten minutes to grab a quick lunch, sometimes fast food is the only solution.

Especially if you’re keen to get your lips around some of the restaurant chain’s new delicious drops.

In good news for fans of the golden arches, the chain released its loyalty scheme in January of last year called MyMcDonald’s Rewards.

But how does the scheme work, and, more importantly, does it mean free food?

Here is what you need to know.

How does the McDonald’s loyalty scheme work?

McDonald’s loyalty scheme works in three steps.

First, download the free McDonald’s app from Google Play or the App Store before signing in/registering and opting into McDonald’s rewards.

From then on, every time you order via the app (whether for pick up or delivery), you’ll earn one point for every penny you spend.

You currently also receive 1,000 bonus points on your first order and can earn bonus points on selected menu items.

The McDonald’s website also states: ‘If you’re ordering via a Kiosk, Front-Counter or Drive-thru, you need to generate a unique code, located in the ‘code’ section of your app and give this before you order.’

Then the final step is, as you might imagine, spending your points.

What can you redeem your MyMcDonald’s Rewards points for?

In short – quite a lot. There are plenty of food options that you can exchange your points for when ordering.

What can you redeem your MyMcDonald's Rewards points for?

You can redeem your points for the following:

1,500 points:

  • Hash Brown
  • Mini McFlurry
  • Regular McCafé
  • Side Salad
  • Small Fries

2,500 points:

  • Bacon Mayo Chicken
  • Cheesy Bacon Flatbread
  • Double Cheeseburger
  • Medium Fries
  • Veggie Deluxe

4,000 points:

  • Six Chicken McNuggets
  • Big Mac
  • Double Sausage and Egg McMuffin
  • McChicken Sandwich
  • Premium Salad

Remember that you can only redeem your points when ordering directly with McDonald’s rather than through a third party like Just Eat, and your points can expire if you don’t use them.

To redeem your points at a drive-through or in-store, simply select your reward from the rewards menu and hit the ‘add to your code’ button, letting staff know the one-time code when ordering.

You can also donate your points to charities like the Ronald McDonald House Charities, BBC Children in Need, and FareShare.
