A new list of trending baby names in the UK has revealed traditional names are growing in popularity – and a few may surprise you.

The name Gary – which has fallen out of favour among parents in recent decades – is apparently making a comeback, after reports the moniker may become ‘extinct’ in the UK.

Barlow, Oldman, and Lineker can rest assured that they won’t have too much competition, though, as Gary doesn’t quite make the top 100 list just yet.

The list, compiled by UK Baby Names, uses government statistics to determine the movers and shakers for 2022.

As well as Gary, traditional names like James, David, and John were heading up the rankings for boys.

Ian and Paul were two more surprising entries, along with Oliver, Jack, Andrew, Peter, William, Thomas, and Matthew.

Fewer girls names made the trending list, but these also bent towards the classic.

Olivia, Sarah, and Emma were the three said to be growing in usage, suggesting more parents are looking for conventional names over unique ones.

UK Baby Names and Bella Baby also shared the names most (and least) loved among its users over the last year, with Paul making a second appearance for boys.

Eugene, Percy, Lars, Alan, Artie, and Bernard also proved popular, while Chad, Bill, Nigel, Ashton, and Stuart were at the bottom of the list.

As for girls, Kimberly, Claire, Cassidy, Michelle and Madeline were mentioned in the index as on the up.

Falling down the ranks since last year were Kristen, Suzanne, Nicole, Angela, and Lorraine.

It’s a very different story from a few years back, when Gwyneth and Chris debuted baby Apple and Jamie and Jools Oliver named their sons Buddy Bear and River Rocket.

Of the most popular 100 names for the year, Olivia, Amelia, and Isla come out top for girls and for boys, Oliver, Arthur, and George.

It appears parents are looking to give their little ones traditional monikers… and of course making Gary cool again.
