Penny, a seven-year-old Shih Tzu, and her best bud Sandy – a 10-year-old Jack Russell – are looking for a forever home together.
The bonded pair were rescued by the RSPCA and currently reside in the charity’s Cornwall branch.
Staff say Sandy almost acts as if she’s a guide dog for the visually impaired Penny, and the two are never far away from each other.
Sammy Howard, who works at the branch, said: ‘Penny and Sandy were in poor health when they were rescued by our animal welfare officer.
‘They’ve really flourished since being with us but can find new people and new situations a little daunting.
‘So, they are looking for a special and patient home with owners who can help build their confidence and introduce them slowly to all the new sights and sounds in the world.’
Sharing a little more about their personalities, Sammy adds: ‘Penny is such a sweetheart and is more confident than her pal, even though she has restricted vision. She doesn’t let this hold her back and has a real zest for life.
‘Sandy is her favourite friend and acts almost like a guide dog, helping Penny get around. Penny is never far from her pal’s side.
‘When they first arrived with us, Sandy was incredibly anxious and wouldn’t let anyone touch her. After about a week we managed, slowly, to gain her trust, and she’s really started to come out of her shell.
‘As Penny is so sociable, she helps Sandy with her confidence.’
The pair are looking for new owners who can take them both in, who ideally live in a quiet home with no other pets.
They could, however, live with calm older children.
Sammy said: ‘When these sweet dogs know you they are so affectionate and will give you all the love and kisses you could possibly want.
‘They’ll make such wonderful pets and companions, we just need to find them the right home.’
