Woman’s pals compare her to Shrek after fake tan fail turns her skin green

A mum has shared photos of how her skin turned green after using out-of-date fake tan – with her even being compared to Shrek by friends.

Kerry McRobb decided to indulge in a pamper evening by applying fake tan to give her naturally pale skin a golden glow.

The children’s hospital support worker – who admits she looked like ‘Casper the friendly ghost’ without a tan – dug out an old bottle of St Moriz in shade Darker than Dark.

The 20-year-old applied a couple of layers, and although she initially noticed a green tinge, she ploughed on regardless.

Kerry claims the colour continued to get ‘worse and worse’ as it dried, and she soon found herself with green skin.

Sending pictures to her friends, they joked she looked like the swamp-dwelling ogre, though Kerry says she likes to think she looked more like Shrek’s wife Princess Fiona.

Seeing the funny side, she then shared the photos on social media with the caption: ‘This is my sign to stop fake tanning and get back to sunbeds asap.’

Kerry, from Livingston, West Lothian, said: ‘I put the fake tan on as I wanted a golden glow, I used St Moriz Darker than Dark fake tan.

‘Before I was pregnant I would put it on every so often when I went out. Not like in school when we had Tan Thursdays – everyone would be stinking of digestive biscuits.’

The two layers of tan left Kerry ‘taken aback’, although she was thankfully able to wash off most of the green hue with a thorough shower.

Kerry said: ‘I hadn’t fake tanned in over a year because I was pregnant, so it was probably out of date.

‘I wasn’t concerned as I knew it would come off, it was very funny.’

If you want to avoid looking like you’ve got beef with Lord Farquaad, let this be a warning to you to throw away tan when it’s out of date.

Being stored improperly or kept for too long can lead to the DHA in the product oxidising.

Delilah Kealy Roberts at Tanologist told My Imperfect Life: ‘The bronze guide color is made up of three colors – red, yellow and blue – and when the red colour oxidises, blue and yellow are left together to make green.

‘The only thing turning green is the bronzer, which is a temporary color, but we don’t recommend using if it’s green.’

A patch test should give you an idea of the final colour, but replacing your products regularly should do the trick.
