Getting out and enjoying the sun comes with its own perils; wasps flitting around the bins, burnt bits where you forgot your SPF, and melted makeup that just won’t stick to your skin.
Sweat and warm temperatures can change the texture of your makeup leaving it patchy, or cause it to come off altogether.
If you’re prone to a sweat-induced make-under, there are thankfully plenty of tips and products that can get the most out of your cosmetics.
Check out our advice on making your makeup last longer in hot weather.
Do your makeup on cool skin
If you put your makeup on fresh out of a hot shower, you’ll know that it can become melty and hard to work with.
Splash your clean face with cold water before applying your makeup, and it’ll give you a head start. Ensure you dry off, too, as excess water is not going to help matters.
Alternatively, if you use a toner, try putting it in the fridge then swipe over your skin with a cotton pad. It feels great, rebalances your skin, and should help your makeup go on smoothly.
Powder first
World-renowned makeup artist Wayne Goss swears by this unusual trick to keep your base on all day.
After you put on your skincare (don’t forget the sunscreen) and primer, use a large brush to sweep powder across your face.
The technique has been doing the rounds on TikTok, but Wayne is the OG for natural-looking base makeup with staying powder. He uses NARS translucent powder for this look.
Trade secret spray
Follow up any of your looks with a spritz of a setting spray.
Kryolan is a brand designed for the stage, which means their formulations put durability up top in the list of priorities.
TikTok makeup artist Scortezz Beauty called their fixing spray ‘one of the best setting sprays you can buy’, and a trade secret.
Mist over your face once you’ve done all your makeup, and it should take away some of the melt factor.
Use the power of water
It may seem counterproductive to go for water-based formulations when there’s liquid emanating from your pores.
However, a water-based primer doesn’t clog your pores as much as silicone formulas, so it can breathe through your makeup and you overheat less.
Milk Makeup’s Hydrogrip Primer is a huge hit with makeup obsessives online due to its aloe water and blue agave extract composition.
One reviewer wrote, ‘I bought this because I’d heard from a beauty influencer that it is the best for stopping oil creeping through into your foundation and I was astounded at how well this performed. Will never buy another primer please never discontinue this!’
If you’re looking for a dupe on a budget, ELF Cosmetics makes a very similar product that’s been well-reviewed.
For the makeup itself, also go for a water-based formula.
Blot and retouch
No matter how many products you use, even if they’re the best quality and work with your skin to keep makeup on, on days as hot as today flawless makeup for hours is hard.
Worry not, and try not to get trigger happy with applying powder throughout the day. Instead, use blotting paper or a piece of kitchen towel to pull the excess oil and water from the top of your skin.
Then, keep a stippling brush and liquid foundation in your bag to add to your base if it’s becoming blotchy.
Spritz throughout the day
If you wiped your face whenever you sweated, it’d also wipe off all your makeup, so spritzing is a good workaround.
When you feel too hot, cool off with a water-based spray like Soap and Glory’s new hydrating jelly mist.
These will alleviate sweaty skin, and although it seems counterintuitive to put water all over your face, they’ll reduce any cakiness and add a dewy (not damp) glow.
