How to keep your house cool during a heatwave

It’s hot, isn’t it?

Too hot, some might say. With Britain currently experiencing a heatwave, it’s difficult to, you know, get on with your life.

While you might enjoy the cool air-conditioned temp in the office, it’s unlikely you have the system fitted at home (unless you’re fancy).

It’s too hot to lounge at home and definitely too hot to sleep at night. So, what are your options?

First of all, let’s get the obvious ones out of the way.

The more sunshine coming into your home, the hotter it will be. So get some blackout curtains or keep the blinds shut.

Keep your windows and balcony/garden doors open. If you have flies and mosquitos getting in, it might be time to invest in a net.

Leaving these open while you sleep can also be a good way of keeping the house cool at night. Hopefully, the foxes don’t see it as an invitation.

Leave the bedroom doors open at night so cool air can travel through the home.

During the hottest part of the day, shut off unused rooms so the limited breeze can permeate through the rooms you’re in.

If you have a fan, get a mixing bowl, put some icy water or ice pack in it and place it in front of the fan. Fans have that annoying habit of circulating the same warm air. If you angle them towards windows, they’ll push out the warm air.

If you have a ceiling fan, set it anti-clockwise.

Or you can hang a wet sheet in front of a window like a curtain for a chill-infused breeze.

Change your sheets! Not only is it cleaner and fresher, light cotton materials are also better for the summer months. If a duvet is too thick, use a light blanket (because you know you need something to cover you in case the monsters come). Or let your top sheet double up as a blankie.

Heat also travels upwards so it might be time to head downstairs for a kip or consider sleeping on the floor.

Keep the lights off, avoid using the oven/stove. Why not grill outside instead, if you can?

Or you can focus on your internal temperature, sleep in light cotton clothes (or naked if you’re up for it), drink plenty of water and keep it beside the bed, or leave a cold bowl of water near you to dip your feet if it’s particularly unbearable.

Alternatively you can sleep like an Egyptian which is a cool way of saying soak your blankets in water right before going to bed, to stay cool during the night.
