Every year we look forward to an end to the rain and grey days in the UK, forgetting that when the sun really does arrive on our shores, we won’t be prepared to handle the heat.
Our well-insulated homes without air-con are ready for winter, but trying to keep cool indoors at home in the summer is a real challenge.
If you’re lucky enough to have got your hands on a fan or two before they sold out during heatwaves past, this is how to level up your home fan use to create a DIY air con system (and it won’t cost you a penny).
How to create DIY air con by putting ice in front of a fan
If you have a fan at home, you can make it work harder for you and cool the room down even further by simply placing a bowl of ice in front of it.
Yes, it really is that simple and yes, it really does work.
Having tried it first-hand, Metro.co.uk can confirm that this DIY air con hack does make your fan blow considerably cooler air around the room.
And let’s face it, in this heat, we’ll take whatever sweet and slightly cooler relief from the warmth that we can get.
Here’s how to create DIY air con by putting ice in front of a fan:
- Position your fan pointing in the direction desired – but for best results place your fan in front of an open door or window which is guarded by shade.
- Fill a bowl or waterproof container with blocks of ice. For the coolest possible air from your fan, try and pile the ice cubes up so they are sitting above the rim of the bowl.
- Place a towel on the surface in front of your fan and then put the bowl of ice on top of it so that the fan is blowing air into the stack of ice and ten outwards towards your desired location.
- Turn your fan on and enjoy the ice cold air to keep you cool during the heatwave.
