Woman creates full-length gown from rubbish in quarantine hotel room

Spending time in a quarantine hotel doesn’t sound like much fun – but one woman found a great way to fill the time.

Marnee Halleen, from Perth, Australia, created a beautiful flowing gown using only things she found around her.

The 25-year-old was returning from Canada after living there for two-and-a-half years, but before she could reunite with friends and family, she had to spend two weeks in a Sydney hotel as part of coronavirus restrictions.

She said she’s not particularly creative and had never designed a dress before but she had lots of time on her hands.

Most of the dress was made from the waste created by the food that was delivered every day.

She cut strips from the paper bags she had building up to make the 43 roses on the bodice.

But as she didn’t like them being white, she realised she could use the leftover coffee sachets from breakfast to stain the paper and make them all a brown colour.

For the skirt, she scrunched up paper to make it more malleable and give a bit of texture.

And as she saw it taking shape, she ordered in some scissors, sticky tape and a glue gun to piece it all together.

She revealed the finished look on Facetime to friends and family.

Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, she said: ‘My friends, who were skeptical, were shocked and said it was something they would wear.

‘My mum just said “I am so proud of you, this is incredible.”‘

Now finished quarantine and back home in Perth, she took her handmade dress with her and it even survived being folded and placed in the overhead locker on the plane.
