A Ukrainian couple have taken their relationship to a whole new level by handcuffing themselves together for three months.

Sick of their on-again-off-again relationship, online car salesman Alexandr Kudlay, 33, and beautician Viktoria Pustovitova, 28, decided to try this ‘experiment’ in a bid to help them deal with conflict.

The pair, who live in Kharkiv, are documenting their time chained together on social media, and have amassed thousands of followers on Instagram as a result.

‘In terms of physical comfort, with every day passing, we are getting used to it more and more. It gets easier,’ Alexandr told Reuters.

Alexandr was the one who originally came up with the idea after Viktoria said she wanted to break up.

He said: ‘We used to break up once or twice a week. When during another fight Vika once again said that we had to break up, I replied: “Then I will attach you to myself”.’

She wasn’t into the idea at first, and hung up the phone on him.

However, she changed her mind eventually, and, since Valentine’s Day, they’ve been literally chained together.

They do everything together, from the weekly shop to smoking and getting dressed, and have absolutely no personal space.

‘I decided it will be an interesting experience for me, that it will bring into my life new bright emotions which I did not experience before,’ Viktoria said.

‘I love him, so I came to a decision to do it.’

Since chaining themselves together, the pair have appeared on Ukrainian talk shows and regularly share pictures of themselves on social media with captions that stress how important mutual respect is.

While ‘some tension has come up’, they say they’ve learned new ways of handling conflict.

Alexandr said: ‘Fights between us did not disappear, we still fight.

‘But when we approach a dead end and there is no understanding between us, we simply stop talking instead of packing up our things and walking away.’

Public opinion has been mixed, with some praising the couple for going to such extremes to make it work, while others have been more sceptical.

One comment called the two a ‘lovely couple’, while another questioned: ‘Can anyone explain me what for?’ [sic].

Many have asked how the couple go to the loo – to which the answer is one waits outside with just their hand in the bathroom while the other sees to their needs.

As for showering, they take turns.
