It’s the day we wait for every week, counting down the hours until 5pm.

But it seems most of us are clocking off mentally at 2.52pm, as a new study found this is the average time that Brits switch their attention from work to weekend.

The poll on 2,000 adults found that ‘Friday feeling’ kicks in because work pressure slows for 35% of people, inboxes quieten for a quarter of people, and for another quarter they switch on music.

As a nation, Fridays typically see us more relaxed throughout the day knowing that the weekend is near, as found by food brand Old El Paso via OnePoll.

On Fridays, 15% of us finish work earlier, 23% go to bed later and 11% dress down.

Over three in five adults think it’s important to have something to look forward to on a Friday, especially in lockdown.

And it shows, as a third have made more effort with their households on Friday evenings to spend time together than they did pre-pandemic, with nearly half of Brits regularly aiming to have evening plans to mark the arrival of the weekend.

38% of us appreciate the ‘Friday feeling’ more now when there’s less social opportunity.

The activities Brits are gravitating towards the most in lockdown include having a meal together, watching a film, making cocktails, playing board games and playing online quizzes.

Our tastes have become somewhat more wholesome as previously going out for drinks was the most popular activity among the Brits who participated in the poll.

Elsewhere our company has changed, with people saying they now spend more Friday nights with their family.

Sarah Hanley from Old El Paso says: ‘There’s no doubt Friday nights have greatly changed for the nation in the past year.

‘But the research shows it’s more important than ever to make plans to look forward to when the week ends.

‘Despite our homes becoming our offices and classrooms, it’s encouraging that Fridays have a more fun and relaxed atmosphere in households.

‘From watching films together, to cooking and eating tasty meals as a family, it’s important to mark the start of the weekend.’
