A man who calls himself the ‘CEO of jawline’ has shared how he achieved a chiselled chin.
Luca Marchesi, from Milan, Italy, said he has been working on his jawline for years, and for the last two months he has been using a mouth device to sculpt it further.
The model shared his look – a triangular jaw that sticks out – on TikTok where it has been viewed millions of times.
To achieve this, Luca has been using facial exercisers to create more width due to the overuse of the masseter muscle.
The masseter muscle is your primary chewing muscle and is also involved in clenching your jaw and grinding your teeth.
The mouth exerciser is a foam piece that Luca repeatedly bites into and releases in order to shape up his face.
But the look has been criticised on his social media.
Many people likened the TikToker to cartoon characters and told him his jawline is a bit too defined.
We spoke to some experts about the possible dangers of training your mouth like this regularly.
Dr Martina Hodgson, a dentist and Invisalign doctor at The Dental Studio tells us: ‘Over-developed masseter muscles – whether unintentional through teeth clenching, grinding or deliberate – can cause problems such as migraines and TMJ or temporomandibular joint pain.
‘These are the muscles that connect the jawbone to the cheekbone and help us to chew, so an over-development in this region is not advised.’
If people develop pain from teeth clenching or grinding or even from using a facial exerciser as Luca, there are ways to reduce it.
Dr Martina adds: ‘The usual way to treat this condition is to offer a course of Botox injections which will first help to relax the muscles and then reduce inflammation, easing the pressure and assisting with comfortable chewing which in turn will relieve jaw pain and migraines.
‘Another option to ease this condition if it’s caused by bruxism, would be to wear a bite raising appliance at night to help reduce the pressure on the muscles’ abs jaw joint. ‘
Dr Baldeep Farmah, medical director at Dr Aesthetica in Birmingham adds that Luca may come to regret all the training in a few years.
He explains: ‘Although this extreme look was created deliberately in order to achieve the appearance of an exaggerated masculine jawline, we do see a milder version of over-developed masseter muscles, which is usually due to bruxism or teeth clenching.
‘In addition to sometimes causing pain when chewing, this look can also actually make the face look much older rather than more attractive.’
Cosmetic practitioner, Amar Suchde of AMS Aesthetics says if people want to get this look, there are easier and safer ways to do so.
‘There could’ve been a more efficient way of doing this if Luca wanted a more masculine, defined appearance,’ he tells us.
‘Non-surgical treatments could be the way forward. The rise of using dermal fillers, which contains a substance called hyaluronic acid in a gel like substance, could’ve been used to help create the desired appearance.
‘The rise of masculinisation treatments are increasing with more and more men opting for filler treatments to enhance and define their jaw.
‘Using filler, while respecting the anatomical features, you can really re-create a jawline that matches the physical features of the face.’
