In the market for a new home?

How about an old one instead?

This 15th Century castle might not be in the best shape, but with an asking price of just £225,000 – less than your average London flat – it’s quite the bargain.

Piteadie Castle, in Kirkcaldy, Fife, was build back in the 1400s, then renovated 200 years later with the addition of a stair tower and a carved coat of arms on the gateway.

Now, it’s up for sale.

The castle could be turned into a dreamy family home, but it’s worth noting that any potential owners are advised against giving it a complete makeover.

Historic Environment Scotland urged a ‘sensitive’ restoration that will ‘preserve cultural significance’.

So no knocking down those original stone walls.

The castle is pretty glorious in its original state, to be fair, even if it will need quite a bit of work to make it a livable space.

Offering six bedrooms and five bathrooms, the property sits on 3.8 acres of land, complete with an orchard, its own tennis court, a polytunnel, and a chicken coop in the garden.

It has stunning views across the countryside towards the Firth of Forth, and is a short drive from The Forth Road Bridge and Edinburgh Airport.

Jamie McNab from Savills, who are selling the property, said: ‘The castle ruins and adjacent land are also an interesting prospect, with the opportunity to develop the site for residential use being a distinct possibility, though naturally planning consent and the support of Historic Environment Scotland would be required.’

If you’re keen to live like an old-timey royal, you can request a viewing through Savills.
