We’re all for mixing up sweet and savoury but this might be a step too far.

McDonald’s in China is releasing a new product – slices of Spam in a bun, topped with an Oreo cookie crumb and mayonaise.

News of the burger has been shared across the world after Daniel Ahmad, from London, posted promotional pictures on Twitter.

He said: ‘McDonald’s China is introducing a new Oreo x Spam burger on December 21. There will be 400,000 produced and sold.’

‘Look, I saw this so you have to see it too. Sorry, that’s how it works.’

The McDonald’s website highlights that Spam is a trademark but did not mention Oreo, so people weren’t totally sure the crumbs were officially made by the biscuit brand, but said it was that taste and texture.

Although it might sound like a hoax, Metro.co.uk spoke to someone who has tried it, and others have posted on social media about getting their hands on one.

Surprisingly, it actually has some good reviews.

Jeff, a Canadian who lives in Shanghai, went to try it with some friends but told Metro.co.uk that you could only order one per person.

After sharing the first one between them, they enjoyed it so much they ordered more.

He said: ‘We found it .. we ate it .. it was really good .. no joke!’

After some confusion about whether the white sauce in the picture on the McDonald’s website was Oreo cream or something else, Jeff confirmed that it is mayonnaise.

Although Jeff wasn’t sure of the origin behind the combination, some on social media suggested it was based on a Chinese meme, which is hard to explain to non-native speakers.

Another Twitter user @liqnqing said the burger didn’t look great but he didn’t think it was too bad when he took a bite.

@nofromearth said it was ‘good actually’.

Not everyone was a fan though – Cameron Fowler filmed a video of himself trying it for Youtube and said it was ‘one of the worst things I have ever eaten’.

With just 400,000 available in a country of 1.4 billion people, it’s expected to sell out on the launch date today.
