Christmas is practically here but for many, that festive feeling just hasn’t manifested.
Whether you’re spending Christmas solo after the tier four announcement, or you’re just keeping it smaller to avoid travel, there’s no reason a different Christmas has to be a dismal one.
How can you celebrate the day with family and friends beyond the customary Zoom quiz?
Virtual Christmas celebrations
Let’s just get the obvious one out the way: thanks to modern technology, being all alone on Christmas doesn’t mean having a lonely one – and Zoom lifting their 40-minute limit for non-paying customers is an incentive to get your festive jumper on and gather the troops, virtually.
There are endless – well, 33 – ideas of how you can have a Zoom party this Christmas.
But that’s not all. Here are some things you can do together but apart…
Go for a cycle or walk
If you’re fortunate enough to live local to your loved ones, but are forbidden from actually going to each other’s houses, why not take a brisk post-lunch stroll?
Of course, there are a few caveats to this: if you’re in a tier four area, you can only meet one other person from a different household, and in an outdoor, public space.
In tier three, people can meet in groups of up to six, providing they congregate in a public space.
And if you’re feeling really energetic, you could always hop on a bike and enjoy the quiet city streets or country lanes.
Organise a scavenger hunt
After the first lockdown saw many of us dutifully jump on Zoom quizzes week after week, most people never want to hear the word ‘quizmaster’ again.
Enter… the scavenger hunt.
All you need to do is put together a list of things the attendees might have lying around their house (like Christmas crackers, or a face mask) and then ask everyone to work their way down the list.
Award points for the most creative way to present it to you, or to whoever gets it first.
Simply set the timer, turn on your camera, and get creative.
Watch a film together
Download the Netflix Party Google extension to chat and watch the streaming service together at the same time.
Find some of the best Christmas films streaming on the site and it’s almost like they’re right there with you.
How to download Netflix Party:
- Visit netflixparty.com on Google Chrome.
- Select Get Netflix Party for free.
- You will then be redirected to the Google Chrome web store page to download the extension. Click Add to Chrome.
- A pop-up box will then open. Select Add Extension.
Make something together
A quaint and family-friendly choice, why not get everyone to do some crafts together at the same time?
You could get the kids making a bauble while the grown ups mix some cocktails.
Virtual game nights
Playing board games (and subsequently falling out over board games) is a Christmas tradition – and one you don’t have to break because you’re not together.
The Scrabble app is available free from Electronic Arts, both on iTunes and Google Play.
It allows playing with friends, single player, random opponents, and speed play.
You can also play Monopoly through the app – though this costs £3.99 to download.
Alternatively, you can set up a Monopoly board and play it the old-fashioned way with other participants joining over webcam.
Or you could organise a Christmas-themed bingo game – all you need is a nominated caller and some downloadable cards.
Virtual quizzes for Christmas
If you’ve managed to recover from quiz fatigue from earlier in the year, this could be a good time for a bit of harmless fun with the family.
Metro.co.uk have an endless supply of quiz questions and answers for you to choose from, from celebrities’ real names to Pride quiz questions and everything in between.
