The number one grievance between couples living together is clothes being left everywhere.

Moving in with a partner is a big step in any relationship and while exciting, it’s bound to come with a new set of annoyances as you adjust to meshing the mundane bits of your life with another person.

Good Move conducted a study to find out the common points of tension that come with cohabiting, especially as 56% of people surveyed said they had broken up after moving in together.

9% broke up after just four to six months of living together, 8% called it quits after living together for less than three months, and 2% jumped ship in less than a month.

It’s not just newer relationships suffering though, as 6% of respondents split up after five or more years living together.

22% of couples move in together after one to two years of dating, which scientifically speaking is when the honeymoon phase tends to end.

Because of this reality, it’s possible that anything your partner previously did that was annoying yet endearing might become plain annoying after moving in together.

The top 10 bugbears of living with a partner

  1. Leaving clothes/bags/shoes everywhere (22%)
  2. Leaving the toilet seat up (21%)
  3. Not doing the washing up (21%)
  4. Amassing lots of hair in the drain (19%)
  5. Leaving hair clips around (19%)
  6. Not cleaning up after cooking (18%)
  7. Leaving wet towels around the house (17%)
  8. Not doing chores unless asked (17%)
  9. Spending too much time on video games (17%)
  10. Not taking the bins out (16%)

Some pet peeves that didn’t make the top 10 were watching a series without the other person (15%) and staining the sheets with fake tan (13%).

Despite these findings, eight in 10 respondents claimed that they are easy to live with.

An honest 18% admit they aren’t.

Chris Pleines, relationship expert at Dating Scout says: ‘Moving in together is a big decision so you must plan things out carefully.

‘It’s important to be realistic and not expect that everything will go as planned. There will be some bumps along the way but don’t lose heart when these problems pop up.

‘Remember that the most important thing to consider is how you feel for each other and try to have fun while doing the errands and other important things that come with moving together too.’

Most of the grievances found are related to cleaning and organising, so that seems to be a good place to improve on to impress – rather than annoy – your partner.
