Google, the most commonly used search engine, has revealed the top search terms by its users in 2020. Spoiler: they make for bleak reading.
In a year that a global pandemic took hold, the government was generally in chaos, and ‘doomscrolling’ became New Zealand’s word of the year, it’s no surprise that the most searched for terms on Google have been nothing short of ominous.
Global data released by Google has shown coronavirus, death, mask, unemployment and vaccine are among the most searched for terms.
As visualised in an infographic by Reddit user Roshaan Khan, the most popular searches also include more political references, including Black Lives Matter, Donald Trump, and George Floyd.
The data analysis also includes categories such as ‘loss’, which reflect the most searched for names of people after their passing. At the top of the list is Kobe Bryant, followed by Naya Rivera, Chadwick Boseman, Sushant Singh Rajput, and George Floyd.
Major political events such as the US Presidential Election also garnered attention, with political figures Joe Biden, Kim Jong Un, Boris Johnson and Kamala Harris dominating the list of most searched-for people.
Showing the everyday reality of a life in lockdown, the most searched for ‘how to’ questions from the UK specifically ranged from ‘how to…’: make hand sanitiser, a face mask, and bread, to ‘how to get tested for coronavirus’ and ‘how to cut your own hair’.
Here’s hoping for more trivial searches in 2021.
