Take yourself down the freezer aisle in your local supermarket, and you’re amongst some of the staple ingredients of the latest foodie phenomenon.
Introducing: British tapas.
What is British tapas, you ask? Well, look no further, because here at Metro.co.uk, we present to you, the ultimate guide to British tapas.
Think potato smilies, chicken nuggets, chips and garlic bread – the more beige on the plate, the better.
Popular with millennials and Gen Z, it’s the ultimate throwback to childhood.
Making the rounds on TikTok, user @aysanbattal98 shared a clip of her British tapas feast, featuring everything you’d expect to see on an early noughties birthday spread, right down to the last orange Capri Sun.
So, without further ado, here’s everything you’re going to need to create a throwback feast that your 10-year-old self will be jealous of.
Main course
Chicken nuggets
A staple in any British tapas menu, chicken nuggets are a must. Breaded or battered, we’re not fussed.
Yes, you can use Quorn nuggets if you’re veggie.
Potato smilies
Potato smilies are the key to any genzennial’s heart. If you’re wanting to switch things up a bit, try Iceland’s breaded chicken smileys, a game-changing nug/potato smile hybrid. Even better, have both.
Garlic bread
Okay, so not British at all, but garlic bread is non-negotiable when it comes to British tapas. Garlic baguettes work best, but if you’ve only got slices and a flatbread to work with, that’s fine too.
Turkey twizzlers
Turkey twizzlers made a triumphant return earlier this year, 15 whole years after Jamie Oliver banned them and stopped all future primary school children from experiencing the joy of turkey twizzler day at lunch time.
But now they’re back, there’s no excuse to not add them to your British tapas line-up (well unless you’re vegetarian or vegan, in which case perhaps swap them out for some falafel?).
Oven chips
A freezer essential back then, and a freezer essential now, oven chips are a must-add to your tapas offering. Serve with ketchup.
Curly fries
If oven chips and potato smilies aren’t already enough, add curly fries to the mix.
Mini pizzas
Pizza, but mini. What’s not to love?
Sausage rolls
Sausage meat stuffed inside crumbly puff pastry instantly screams childhood buffets. We recommend the mini ones you find in the party section of the freezer aisle.
Baked beans
Baked beans are an imperative part. Needed to counteract the dryness of the above items.
Spaghetti hoops
Same reason as the baked beans, but better.
Dessert
Party rings
The classic British biscuit, party rings are the perfect addition to the dessert section. These sweet treats will add a pop of colour to the spead.
Jammie dodgers
A firm favourite amongst the British public, jammie dodgers are shortbread biscuits sandwiched with strawberry jam. They’re vegan too. Isn’t that right, Beverley Callard?
Iced fairy buns
You know, those little buns with a round disk of icing on top? If you don’t pull the icing off and save it until last, you’re doing it wrong.
Beverages
Fizzy Vimto
A totally underrated beverage, fizzy vimto is such a game changer and will fit right into your British tapas. It’s fruity and refreshing, just what you need.
Capri suns
Specifically the orange flavour. Open with caution, there’s nothing worse than piercing the straw through both sides.
