The world of dating has changed.
Meeting someone new in 2020 has proven to be a challenge. We moved from swiping right and meeting in a pub to swiping right and awkwardly Zoom calling a prospective partner from a bedroom in our parent’s house.
And now as things become more challenging on the ground, Taiwanese airline EVA Air is taking dating to the sky.
As air travel took a significant hit during this pandemic, some airlines like Qantas adopted a ‘flights to nowhere’ concept, which saw passengers embark on a sightseeing flight with no destination.
EVA Air has taken this idea and added a dash of romance by launching its first-ever ‘Fly! Love is in the air’ matchmaking flight in partnership with travel experience company Mobius.
The first of its kind, the airline is offering seating on three special flights on Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. On board singles can mingle in the hopes of finding ‘the one’ with each flight offering different experiences.
On Christmas Day the flight will take singles above the east coast of Taiwan with afternoon tea on landing. The New Year’s Eve offering will be a dinner before boarding with singles counting down to 2021 together, while on New Year’s Day singles can enjoy an early morning breakfast trip to herald in a fresh start. All meals are prepared by Michelin-starred chef Motoke Nakamura, making the experience extra special.
Mirroring the rules of normal speed dating, passengers will be randomly assigned seats and are free to move around if the conversation is dropping like cabin pressure. Singles will also be given two hours to get to know each other after landing.
To apply, the Mobius You & Me website says singles ‘need to register and make a booking on the Mobius website. Fill up their personal details including birthday, education degree, residence area, profession, company name, confirmed to be single, dietary enquiry (for inflight meals) and EVA Air infinity mileage membership number.’
Bookings are on a ‘first in first served’ basis and cost TWD8388 (approx £221.50). Unfortunately, the dating service is only available to Taiwanese residents aged between 24 and 38 so this option is unfortunately out of reach.
However, if it’s a success, we think British Airways should devise its own speed dating in the sky.
Because with lockdown 2.0, the singles on the ground need it.
