A heartbroken swan who found new love in lockdown has inspired a children’s book.
Swan Mrs Newbie had been suffering with a broken heart, following the death of her former mate, Mr Newbie – who died unexpectedly in 2016.
He lost his life when he flew into a block of flats near the ponds in Hampstead Heath where the couple lived together.
Swans tend to be monogamous, staying with the same mate for life, so Mrs Newbie was initially uninterested in other bachelors who showed interest in her.
That is, until Wallace entered the pond.
The grieving Mrs Newbie hadn’t left Hampstead Heath since losing her beloved partner, but in March she disappeared for three days, leaving volunteers worried about her wellbeing.
On the third day of her disappearance, she turned up on local rooftop and was taken to the Swan Sanctuary in Shepperton, so she could recuperate.
However, when a volunteer came to collect Mrs Newbie, Wallace stood in the way to protect his new beau.
After noticing a ‘subtle communication’ between the birds, Swan Sanctuary volunteer and wildlife photographer Louisa Green decided to bring the pair back to the Heath together.
And a few months later, the love birds welcomed seven cygnets.
Their love story has inspired a new children’s book titled There’s Something About Wallace: Lockdown Love on Hampstead Heath.
The book has already sold 600 copies since it was published just four weeks ago.
Louisa Green told inews: ‘As a rescuer, I am thrilled that the public are supporting our local story but more than anything I adore that these two lonely swans who faced significant hardship have finally found happiness together.’
