Black Friday, the most frantic shopping day of the year, is upon us.

The pressure of trying to make sure you score the best deals online can make the shopping experience a stressful one.

While Black Friday is officially Friday November 27 and Cyber Monday (when deals traditionally go online) November 30 this year – just like everything else, things are a little bit different and most retailers have been having their sales all week long because they can’t rely on the footfall of the peak sales day of the year in-stores.

Unlike previous years the deals will be exclusively online with all ‘non-essential’ stores being closed.

No one wants to overpay for items, especially after the year we’ve all had, so here are some top tips for getting the best deals on Black Friday, across the weekend and up to Cyber Monday.

Don’t just hit ‘buy’

When shopping on Amazon most of us click on the yellow ‘Buy Box’, but what a lot of us don’t know is that if you click past the yellow buy box there will be other sellers to buy from, some of which are much cheaper.

Some offer pre-owned, like new condition which makes the prices cheaper still.

Don’t just buy the first option you find – have a look at those other seller options to ensure you’re not missing a better deal.

Sign up to email lists

Follow your favourite brands on Instagram and sign up to their mailing list for access to codes and discounts.

While most Black Friday sales will be easily visible on stores’ sites, sometimes subscribers and followers are rewarded with extra discount codes and secret deals.

Take stock of what you need

Make a list of what you actually want and need, so you don’t end up buying things for the sake of a sale.

Take stock of what you need, or better still, make a running note of the things you have wanted throughout the year, and shop for these items.

Try to steer clear of temptation to add anything not on your list into your cart. Black Friday is a great time to get a bargain, but if it’s not something you wanted in the first place, you’re actually spending more money, not less.

Leave the website

If you put things into your basket and then leave the website, as long as you had logged in, often you get an email from the retailer offering you price deduction to buy.

That’s because they don’t want you to give up on making a purchase, so will often try to reel you back in. Game the system by logging in, acting like you’re ditching your Black Friday finds, and then waiting for an email to draw you back.

Be open to other colours

Sometimes items can be cheaper in a different colour, so if you’re not too worried about the colour of what you’re ordering then change the colour and see if it affects the price.

Check out Amazon Renewed

This is a secondary site and offers refurbished units like tech gear but for cheaper prices, while still offering a one year guarantee.

These prices can be up to 40% off.

Check items across different brands

Before you hit ‘buy’, make sure you’ve checked the item’s price on different retailers’ sites.

Brands sometimes sell their items cheaper on Amazon than they do on their own website, so cross check your prices before hitting buy to make sure you’re getting the best price on the day.

Hold out for Cyber Monday

Some items, such as TVs, could actually be on a better deal on Cyber Monday.

If you can hold your nerve you may well find a better sale on the day following the weekend of Black Friday.

With all these tips in mind, it’s noteworthy to remember that it’s really important not to get into debt this Black Friday.

Only buy what you can afford, no matter how good the sale is.

Make sure you’ve done your research and that the prices you’re seeing are actually a deal and not just that the item’s price was inflated just before the sale.
