The visible thong trend is back whether we like it or not

Have you ever liked your underwear so much you wished you could show it off to more people?

Well, you’re in luck, because apparently visible thongs are back in fashion.

Yes, you read that right – in the year of our lord 2020, celebrities have somehow made visible thongs and g-strings happen again.

Famous faces including Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez, Megan Barton Hanson, and even Bella Hadid on the Versace catwalk have brought back the trend for exposed underwear.

This controversial and oft-ridiculed look was first championed by the likes of Britney Spears, Halle Berry and Paris Hilton around 20 years ago

So how did we get here? It’s hard to tell.

Kim K posted a picture on Instagram five days ago of her wearing a backless grey dress and a very prominent red g-string, which has actually been sewn into the back of the dress.

The look instantly brings to mind the ensemble Gillian Anderson wore to the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party in 2001, which included a backless navy blue dress and a very high-waisted black thong.

Kim’s post came a couple of months after Megan Barton Hanson posted a photo of herself wearing a very visible black thong under PVC trousers.

Alexa Demie debuted the waistband of her thong under a backless dress at the premier for Euphoria in June 2019, so this has clearly been bubbling away for quite some time.

Before Kim, Megan, and Alexa waded into these dark waters, Vogue published an article way back in 2017, claiming that wearing your thong out for the world to see was going to be trendy again.

Maybe you enjoy the comfort of nostalgia. Maybe you’re not into the hypocrisy of men’s visible boxer waistbands being socially acceptable but visible women’s underwear waistbands being frowned upon. Maybe you just dgaf.

Regardless of why, if you find yourself drawn to this reborn trend, we recommend not wearing your thong out to any serious occasions or places.

Weddings, funerals, christenings, work, jury service – we recommend keeping your thongs well hidden when dressing for these and similar occasions.

On the other hand, casual trips to the pub, covid-friendly gatherings with friends, even a date if you’re feeling bold are all occasions on which you could get away with showing a bit of thong.

If you’ve decided to give the look a go and want to freshen up your thong wardrobe, here are some particularly nice ones to inspire you.
