The economic repercussions of the pandemic has meant more people are now facing homelessness in the UK.
Every year, charity Shelter works hard to help those worst affected by homelessness and this Christmas they are putting on a whopper of an event to raise money.
Shelter will throw the ‘UK’s biggest ever virtual carol concert’ which will be streamed on the organisation’s website.
The ‘Home Hope Song’ concert will run in the candle-lit church of St Martin-in-the-Fields in London and will be hosted by DJ Edith Bowman.
Set to run on December 3 at 7pm for 45 minutes, the concert will see guest appearances from the likes of Julie Walters, Stephen Fry and Rob Rinder. The programme will be a mix of live music as well as first-hand stories from individuals the charity has helped.
The event will be free to stream but donations are encouraged and the sponsors of the event Nationwide Building Society will match pledges up to £43k.
Of course, with it being virtual, nobody will have to listen to each other’s singing in real life – instead you can belt out the songs from the comfort of your own sofa.
Polly Neate, Shelter’s chief executive, said: ‘It has been a year of unspeakable difficulty for far too many families. For the people and families who Shelter support, winter is always tough – and this year it will be harder than ever. Our services have seen unprecedented demand this year as more and more people faced housing issues and losing their homes. This Christmas may not be a time of joy for many people.
‘But the Hope Home Song concert is a chance to stand together against homelessness, Hope is what gets us through – so let’s come together to make it. Join Shelter and help us create the UK’s biggest ever virtual carol concert – and show your support for the families facing this winter and Christmas without a home.’
