It’s officially autumn, and already the temperatures are dropping and the leaves are turning.
As we say goodbye to summer, people start asking one another the same question: ‘have you put your heating on yet?’
Some households hold out as long as they can, others crank it up with the first chill.
But when it comes to using your central heating, is it true that leaving it on low all day saves more money?
Is it cheaper to leave your heating on a low setting all day?
Like most things in life, the answer isn’t straightforward.
Experts at Energy Saving Trust (EST) suggest it’s a myth that leaving the heating on low all day saves money.
On the one hand, by leaving your heating on all day, the boiler will have to work to keep the temperature at a set level and you’ll be consuming energy all day compared to just setting the heating to come at select times.
However, if your home is colder, it will take more energy to heat it up when you do come to turn your heating on.
EST advise using a timer.
This allows your heating to turn on and off when you’ll want it most, and you don’t have to worry about forgetting to turn it off.
Many experts agree that the important thing to consider when it comes to efficiently heating your home is working out where the heat escapes your home.
The Green Age – an energy saving community – states that if your home is well insulated, you could use less energy whether you leave the heating on low all day or use a timer.
This is because the lesser the heat loss, the less energy you’ll use getting your home to a toasty temperature.
