Our weekly review series, Is It Worth the Faff? has seen a number of masks and mask-type products.
From the Foreo UFO 2 (which I was hugely impressed with aside from its high cost) to Sephora lip masks (which Ellen was horrified to find she couldn’t drink tea while wearing) we’ve tried a lot.
Personally, I put on face masks at least three times a week, and love feeling all moisturised and/or fresh – depending on the ingredients.
So it made sense that I’d try the Glow Recipe Watermelon Sleeping Mask that every influencer and their mother has featured on their grid at one point or another.
What is the Glow Recipe Watermelon Sleeping Mask?
This adorable little pot is a mask you put on before you go to sleep in the evening, promising to soften your skin in the evening and have you looking like the many Insta-baddies that also use it.
The standout ingredient is watermelon, which contains vitamin C and A, and lycopene which supposedly improves skincare.
There’s also hyaluronic acid and AHAs for moisturisation and exfoliation as you sleep.
All these ingredients don’t come cheap, though. At Cult Beauty it’s £20.50 for a 30ml sample size and £41 for the larger 80ml.
Faff involved
I’m a night-time bather, so I had a bath where I cleansed, before using a toner (the Aldi Lacura one is great) and a hydrating spray (I used the Pixi Glow Mist with propolis and argan oil).
You then thoroughly mix the mask for a minute to get the gel texture you need. As I bought the smaller version it didn’t come with the special spoon, so I just used the end of a regular spoon.
Using enough to cover my whole face, I slathered it on and went to bed. Relatively faff-free, although the texture is – dare I say – a little weird. Some people may say spermy. Not me, but some people.
The results
I fully expected to wake up looking like a supermodel, so the results it did have were probably overshadowed by my underlying disappointment.
My skin does feel smooth, but not as hydrated and glass-like as I’d potentially expect from a leave-on mask that has loads of time to sink in and work its magic.
Is it worth the faff?
The results weren’t at all bad, but they weren’t amazing.
This mask is very expensive, and I’m probably spoilt with all the Korean skincare out there that truly works instant magic, but I don’t think this is worth it for me.
Pros are that it’s easy to use, smells nice, and the AHAs in there certainly do their job as I feel exfoliated.
Cons are that it’s not mega hydrating for those who’d normally use a thick night cream, and it didn’t provide the glow I was hoping for.
Overall, despite being low faff, I think this mask has been overhyped on social media and isn’t worth it compared to the myriad others on the market.
I’d like to try the Avocado Retinol Sleeping Mask from Glow Recipe to see if it’s just the ingredients of this that didn’t do it for me personally, but when I have a drawer full of night-time products that wow me far more, unfortunately the Watermelon Glow doesn’t get the seal of approval this time.
