Toffee apples are a classic Halloween and Bonfire Night treat and they are much easier to make than you might think.

You might panic at the idea of boiling hot toffee but the mixture needs just two ingredients.

Add in the apple itself and you can whip this up with just three things.

For the toffee, you’ll need golden syrup and caster sugar.

If you want to add to the traditional recipe, you can also pick up some nuts or sprinkles to roll the apples in but its optional.

And of course, if you aren’t a toffee fan, you can always try dipping the apples in melted chocolate instead, or create a mix of both.

You’ll need something to attach to the apples to make it easier to dip, and to hold as you eat it.

If you have some lollipop sticks, they work well, or try BBQ skewers or if you’re just making them to eat at home, sticking a fork into the top is a good alternative.

Ingredients

  • 6 apples (choose whichever variety you like best)
  • 300g caster sugar
  • 3 tbsp golden syrup
  • Nuts, sprinkles, dried fruit (optional)

Method

  1. Put the apples in a bowl and pour boiling water over the top. This helps to wash them and remove any residue. Leave for one minute, carefully pour the water away and then dry the apples.
  2. Insert skewers, sticks or forks into the top of the apples. You want to make sure it goes securely into the core but doesn’t come out the other end. Make sure you put it in the top, rather than the bottom as this means the apples will still sit up once covered. Place the apples on a baking tray lined with greaseproof paper, close to the stove.
  3. Put the sugar, golden syrup and 5 tbsp of water into a pan. Let it dissolve and do not stir. If you have a sugar thermometer, you need to heat it to 140C. If you don’t you can test the caramel by dropping a little into bowl of cold water. It should harden as soon as it touches the water and be brittle. If it feels squishy when it cools, you need to cook it more.
  4. Once it reaches the correct temperature, you need to be fast. Take the pan off the heat and dip each of the apples into the toffee, turning them so they are evenly coated and then let the excess drip away. Do not touch the liquid as it will be very hot. If the mixture starts to thicken in the pan, you can return it to the heat again until it has softened.
  5. If you want to add toppings, roll the apples in these now before the toffee sets.
  6. Once you are happy with the apple, set it back on the lined baking tray, allowing the toffee to drip and create a flat bottom. Allow to cool for at least 30 minutes and then enjoy.
