Whether they go by nana and grandad, grandma and grandpa, nanny and pops, Bubbe and Zaydeh, Jaddi and Jaddati, MeeMaw or whatever other variations and unique names your family have come up with, grandparents are a vital ingredient in the family dynamic.
And grandparents are also still handy as parents – saving their children £16 billion a year on childcare when they look after the grandkids.
Often wise, kind and much less strict than Mum and Dad, today, October 4, is officially National Grandparents Day.
Whether you want to send them a message to let them know you’re thinking of them, or you’d like to remember those who are sadly no longer with us, read on for the most touching messages and quotes said about grandparents…
National Grandparents Day: quotes to celebrate
‘Nobody can do for little children what grandparents do. Grandparents sort of sprinkle stardust over the lives of little children,’ Alex Haley
‘If nothing is going well, call your grandmother.’ – An Italian proverb
‘Every house needs a grandmother in it.’ – Louisa May Alcott
‘When grandparents enter the door, discipline flies out the window.’ – Ogden Nash
‘Because grandparents are usually free to love and guide and befriend the young without having to take daily responsibility for them, they can often reach out past pride and fear of failure and close the space between generations.’ – Jimmy Carter
Are grandparents allowed to hug their grandchildren now?
If you want nothing more to go and hug your grandchild (or you’re a grandchild wanting to hug your grandparents), you still need to be cautious of the rules.
Technically, you can still visit your grandparent(s) indoors if the group doesn’t exceed six people.
As for giving them a hug, it’s not encouraged – unless they have formed a support bubble with you and your household.
The government’s guidance states:
‘People from two different households can meet indoors, which enables you to spend time with your grandchildren.
‘At this time, we still advise that people from different households avoid close contact so childcare should only be provided if it is possible to socially distance from your grandchildren.
‘If you have formed a support bubble with your grandchildren’s household, which is allowed if either you or they live in a single adult household, then there can be close contact and social distancing is not necessary.’
