When it comes to Christmas, you’ll probably see plenty of gift guides and adverts that tell you what to buy for folks.
That might be all well and good to give you an idea for your auntie or co-worker, but kids will not settle for a house plant or a shower gel set.
Depending on what generation you are, you’ll have asked for Hot Wheels, Shrinky Dinks, a Gameboy, Pogs, or a Tamagotchi. Nowadays, these toys just will not cut it.
So, to give you a better idea of what today’s children want – and make you the cool uncle or favourite fairy godmother – we asked some children what was on their list this year.
Rosie, 7
‘My must-have present for Christmas is a hoverboard,’ says Rosie.
‘My Great Uncle Ian brought one to a family BBQ and it was so much fun!’
While Ian is probably persona non grata with Rosie’s parents right now, whoever does buy her a hoverboard will soon take pride of place at the top of the naughty list.
They typically cost upwards of £115, and they’re banned from public roads and pavements – so do need to be kept to the garden.
Oliver, 5
Rosie’s brother Oliver told us: ‘I would like a Nerf Fortnite Sniper so I can shoot my sister Rosie with it.’
Fortnite is one of the most popular games out right now, and the merch that comes with that includes dolls, tools, and apparently guns.
These foam dart guns cost £39.99 from Smyths Toys, and are safe for little ones to play with from ages of 3 and up. You can also get matching goggles.
Sam, 9
According to Sam’s mum, he ‘really wants Mario Kart Live Home Circuit, which is an AR add-on for Mario Kart on the Switch where you race around your own front room and it turns into a virtual race track.’
They’ve unilaterally decided that £200 for Mario and Luigi is way too expensive (we agree, Santa is not made of money) and reviews so far aren’t great. However, if you do have stacks of cash lying around to give to Nintendo, it’s the hot toy of 2020 apparently.
‘Otherwise, Lego definitely- he wants Ninjago legacy sets like the Fire Stone Mech.’ (which will cost you £64.99 from Smyths Toys) or he and his friends want GraviTrax which ‘looks like an expensive marble run type game’ (£35 for a starter set from John Lewis).
Scarlett, 10
On Scarlett’s list is a Lego Creator Downtown Diner. This expert-level kit costs £129.99 and has three floors – including a gym and a recording studio.
As well as that, she’d like a football kit, scooter, Tik Tok selfie camera and stand (you can get a ring light with phone holder for under £20 on Amazon), and a phone.
Kitty, 10 (but will be 11 on Boxing Day)
Given Kitty’s 11th birthday is the day after Christmas, she’s gone all out when it comes to what she wants and has asked her parents for a puppy; ‘A Jack Russell to be precise.’
A cursory search on Gumtree shows Jack Russell puppies range from about £1,000 to £1,200. Good luck, Kitty!
Zak, 11
First on Zak’s list is a new pair of football boots, as ‘his feet are growing rapidly’.
A pair of Messi Adidas boots will set you back £28 from Sports Direct, or some Nike Mercurial Vapor ones inspired by Neymar are £27.97.
Next up is a Lego International Space Centre. According to Zak’s dad, ‘he got Saturn V, and a Lunar Lander the last two Christmas’ and we’ve got a space-themed Lego display cabinet on the go.’
This £64.99, 864-piece set from Lego has a robotic arm to deploy satellites, a shuttle dock, and a microfigure who can spacewalk on top of the structure. Very cool, even from a fusty old adult.
Those looking for a slightly smaller gift can get Zak a ‘Speed Cube’, which is ‘like a Rubik’s Cube only better’. He’s looking to get some faster solve times.
Or, an Apple App Store Voucher ‘so he can download more games’.
Maddy, 9
Maddy tells us: ‘I’d really like a waterproof Fitbit for Christmas because I like to track my steps but I always forget. It would be useful when swimming and for all the handwashing.’
We are extremely impressed with Maddy, given we’ve all been doing about 400 steps a day since lockdown began.
A Fitbit Inspire from Amazon inn black will set you back £49.99 on Amazon.
Melodie, 9
For Christmas this year, Maddy would like a LOL O.M.G Big Band Set because she ‘wants to be a rockstar like her dad.’
This set is a mashup of LOL Surprise! dolls and O.M.G dolls (which are the baby versions). Costing around £140, you get four LOL dolls, four O.M.G dolls, with 70 items in total.
The boombox packaging is designed for an ‘unboxing experience’ – which is apparently all the rage at the moment since the rise of YouTube toy influencers.
Dexter, 5
For Dexter, a Nintendo Switch is the present of choice for 2020. These come in at £279.99 for just the console, with stores like Currys offering packages where games are included.
Although Dexter ‘doesn’t mind what games he gets’, a flavour for the ones you can get include Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Minecraft, The Legend of Zelda, and Pokemon. All very kid-friendly.
If you’d prefer to keep your little ones active as they play, the Ring Fit Adventure game and attachment – £69.99 – is loads of fun.
Jake, 10
Jake has a few different things on his list this year, and his mum gave us the rundown.
Top of his list is the Xbox Series X, which his mum Claie says he wants ‘because it’s the latest Xbox and YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE LATEST! (plus the one he has is pretty old, so is about time for an upgrade.)’
This console isn’t actually out yet, but will be released on 10 November and cost £449.99.
Along with this Jake would like a personalised Xbox controller ‘because his older brother has one and he wants one as they look really cool.’
Not a cheap present, but if you know how many gameplay hours a 10-year-old can get from an Xbox, so it’ll probably work out well on cost-per-use.
If he doesn’t get an Xbox, Jake’s mum said that he’d like some Lego – in particular, the Titanic set ‘as he learned about it at school and is obsessed (I’ve no idea if it even exists…)’
It does actually exist, although it’s made by Oxford (whose bricks are compatible with Lego). It costs £29.99.
Next on his list are Vbucks vouchers and Roblox vouchers, which can buy items on Fortnite and Roblox games. These are a good idea if you have a young relative who’s into their games as you can tailor the amount and they’re more than likely to adore you for it.
Sam, 13
Sam – who is Jake’s big brother – also wants an Xbox Series X, which might make for a joint present opportunity.
Failing this, he’s into boardgames, and has his eye on a game called Town of Salem, which his mum actually thought was a Satan game when she first told him.
Each year he gets a different version of Monopoly, but his mum thinks he might have Monopoly fatigue with ‘at least 10 now under his bed’. So, instead, he’s asked for Football Manager 2021 ‘because it’s always best to have the latest version, of course!’
Sam’s also partial to Waterstone’s vouchers and ‘gets these every year as he is a real bookworm.’
Alice, 7
Another entry for the O.M.G range, Alice says: ‘I would like a Totally Tiny Cook and O.M.G doll surprise doll, because I like their look and they have style!’
Single O.M.G dolls cost around £30 and come in all sorts of styles.
The Totally Tiny Cook and Serve set comprises loads of mini food items and utensils and costs £9.99.
Rosa, 9
Alice’s big sister Rosa says: ‘I would like a hoverboard this Christmas because I’m good on my Heelys so will get to know it quite quickly.’
Specifically, Rosa would like a Hover-1 Flex, which can be bought from Smyths Toys for £129.99.
Rosa adds: ‘I also want a O.M.G doll because it can be friends with my sisters’ one and we can play music from Alexa and pretend they are singing.’ Cute!
George, 11
Continuing on the gaming trend of Roblox and Minecraft, 11-year-old George ‘wants anything to do with Overwatch (an Xbox game).’
More specifically, ‘he wants an Overwatch cookbook, it’s about noodles. His friends have it and he wants to make things from it.’
This book – which has 99 recipes inspired by the heroes in the Blizzard game and their origin stories – and costs from £16.99 on Amazon. Sounds like a great way to get young people involved in the kitchen, and eat some new and exciting dishes, too.
As well as this, George want ‘the Throw the Burrito game’. Apparently ‘It’s by the people who made Exploding Kittens and he thinks it looks really fun.’
This £24.99 game combines cards with dodgeball, which can only be a fun combination.
Jack, 4
4-year-old Jack wants Batman toys because he thinks he is Batman. It is a very Batman thing to do to have toys of yourself.
These range in price, with all sorts to choose from. For £10 you can get a 12-inch Batman figurine, for £19.99 you can get a wearable gauntlet that plays sounds, or for a big present this Imaginext Batman playset is £59.99.
Jack also ‘wants his dad to build him a real Thunderbird 2 ! A huge one.’ We’ll leave that one to Jack’s dad!
