Couple married for 60 years reunited after 215 days apart due to coronavirus restrictions

This is the moment Joseph and Eve Loreth, both 80, were reunited after spending 215 days apart.

The couple has been married for 60 years and 10 months, so being without one another for more than seven months had been difficult for both.

The pair was unable to see each other as Joseph, originally from Iowa, had to go to the hospital in March for an illness.

The granddad had to have his leg amputated and spent several months in rehab, during which Eve, from Nebraska, was unable to visit due to state Covid-19 restrictions.

Joseph and Eve, who have five children and numerous grandchildren – Eve says she stopped counting how many after 10 or 12 – met when they were in high school.

They met at a rollerskating rink as teenagers. Joseph said: ‘She started chasing me around that rink and she’s never stopped chasing me since.’

Now, the couple are delighted to be back together.

During the months they spent apart, Joseph and Eve spoke on the phone every day and their family helped them have window visits at his rehab facility.

In August, Eve joined the Rosecastle at Delaney Creek care facility in Florida, and staff at the community helped make sure she was still able to talk to Joseph every day.

Clary Abreu, Life Enrichment Coordinator, helped facilitate the moment that was captured last week when the two were finally reunited in their new home at Rosecastle.

She says Eve was so excited, she was pacing with eager anticipation the night before and the morning of.

Clary couldn’t keep the couple apart any longer, so while the family was finalising contracts and paperwork for Joseph, she went ahead and wheeled him in to see Eve.

The two were overcome with emotion to be together again.

Rosecastle at Delaney Creek said it is proud to have helped bring these two back together in a safe environment they can now call home.
