The temperature across the UK has dropped, and many Brits are itching for a sunny getaway this October half term to escape the winter chill.

However, the recent surge in UK coronavirus cases have left people wondering whether they will still be allowed to travel.

Keeping up with the constantly changing quarantine lists can be pretty confusing.

Here are the rules for holidaying in the half term.

Holiday restrictions vary not just from country to country, but also from region to region. It is important that you know the rules for your area, or risk a hefty fine.

England

For those not under a local lockdown, you may travel to anywhere (local restrictions may apply), as long as you do not holiday with more than six people (unless your household consists of more than six people).

For the majority of lockdown areas, you are permitted to go on holiday in the UK or abroad, but only with people from your household or support bubble.

You can holiday with people outside of your household or support bubble, but you can only travel with one other household and must observe social distancing at all times.

Wales

Those living in an area in Wales with no local restrictions are free to go on holiday, subject to travel restrictions.

About 2.3 million people living in 16 different areas in north and south Wales (including Cardiff and Swansea) are currently in local lockdown, and are not permitted to leave their area unless they have a ‘reasonable excuse’ – which does not include going on holiday.

Northern Ireland

You are allowed to go on holiday this half term if you live in Northern Ireland.

The only exception is Derry City and Strabane, where residents have been told to avoid all non-essential travel – including holidays.

Within Northern Ireland, mixing or staying indoors with other households who are not in your support bubble is banned, so you can only go on holiday with your household.

Scotland

Scottish residents are allowed to go on holiday, as long as they adhere to the travel restrictions – which are the toughest in the UK.

Current rules state that, although residents can stay in a hotel, B&B, apartment or holiday cottage, they can only stay with members of their household.

Those living in the central belt region are advised not to travel outside their local area from October 10-25 unless absolutely necessary.

People are being advised not to visit the central belt unless they have to.

What are the rules for travelling in the UK?

As long as your area is not under a local lockdown that prohibits you from leaving the area, travelling around and holidaying in the UK is allowed.

Ensure you check whether you are allowed to go on holiday with people outside of your household before you book.

What are the rules on international travel?

As long as you don’t live somewhere under a local lockdown that prohibits you from leaving the area, international holidays are allowed.

However, each UK country has its own travel corridor lists.

For example, people from Scotland are not allowed to travel to anywhere in Greece, but people from England, Wales, and Northern Ireland can travel to most regions (except Mykonos and Crete) without fear of quarantine.

Anyone returning from Italy, Spain, Turkey, Portugal, and France to the UK will have to quarantine for 14 days, as these countries have all been removed from the travel corridor list.

Some countries, such as Cyprus and many Caribbean islands, may also require that you provide evidence of a negative PCR test before you travel.

Make sure you check whether you are allowed to go on holiday with people outside of your household before you book.
