An emoji says a thousand words… even when you don’t just use the aubergine.
And when you’re pondering how to start a conversation with someone you fancy, an emoji can be just think to get things kicked off.
That’s why dating app Bumble has added a new emoji feature, which lets you send emoji reactions in response to specific parts of someone’s profile.
Now, fans of the app might applaud them for making chats easier and potentially getting rid of the awkwardness of terrible opening lines.
Critics, meanwhile, will point out that this new feature enables laziness. If someone can’t muster up the energy to send a proper message, only to smash a winky face emoji, are they really someone with whom you’d like a romantic relationship? Big questions.
The good news for lazy types is that you don’t have to choose from hundreds of emoji options – the feature will launch with just nine emoji to choose from.
Users in the UK, US, and Canada will notice the new feature appearing on Bumble Date.
Jemma Ahmed, head of insights at Bumble, said: ‘So many emotions can be communicated through an emoji – whether it’s love and attraction or humour and silliness.
‘Across our digital communications at large, emojis are part of our new normal.
‘We know that emoji play a big role in how people flirt today and we wanted to make it easier for our community to use this shared language.
‘With so many of us at home, starting relationships online, we hope this new feature will make it a little easier to make the first move.’
Our advice? You’ll still need to work on a great opening line, even if you do break the ice with a good heart-eye emoji.
A couple cannot communicate in emoji alone. Eventually, you’re going to have to actually talk.
